Legendary Comedian Don Rickles Dies At 90
"I think if I took therapy, the doctor would quit. He'd just pick up the couch and walk out of the room." - Don Rickles
Honorary Rat Pack member and a roaster to be reckoned with for over sixty years, the great Don RIckles has passed away at 90 years old due to kidney failure. He was crass, tough, sharp, cruel, nasty, and we enjoyed every moment of him.
Donald Jay Rickles studied theater and acting at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York after returning home from serving in the Navy in WW2. He got his start by appearing in nightclubs before making his big break in 1965 on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson."
Rickles would also appear in films such as Run Silent, Run Deep, The Rat Race starring Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds, and Casino starring Robert DeNiro.
But after his appearance on Carson, Rickles would headline comedy shows in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe, and would frequently be seen in the company of Frank Sinatra and "The Rat Pack."
But what we remember most about Rickles was surely his knockout, go-for-the-jugular burns at every roast he attended:
“Scorsese was our director. He had phone books under his ass so he could see the actors."
"Regis Philbin is here, my dear friend. He goes down to Notre Dame, crosses himself, then they put a football in his ass and kick him."
"What's Bob Hope doing here? Is the war over?"
