The following is a reduction of the motor racing network. The voice of NASCAR. Our hair look. Good what about an editor at Lafayette park across the top of the torso found. We'll put a good date this is an MTA award winning NASCAR lines so race formats something we spent. A great deal of time collectively talking about and believe we're at a point now that's right time to make enhancements this foot the Bruins. Final four. If that should be on the racetrack not just people that survived through rounder you know hey this company competition eliminated themselves. It's gonna have the fourth strongest cars I believe all year long you know file correspond. And that if we are gonna start from scratch she's just probably how we do from beginning from the motor racing network studios in Concord, North Carolina. Curious your host Mike Bagley. Hello everybody welcome to another edition of NASCAR live right here on the motor racing network Mike Bagley and AM Murray through your review and we have lots. And lots and. Lots to cover this week NASCAR made a big announcement. On Monday night in uptown Charlotte as a part of its media tour those big changes that they announced go into effect with this racing season. And to describe those changes here is NASCAR's chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell as he addressed the media on Monday evening. So race formats something we spent a great deal of time collectively talking about and believe we're at a point now that's right time to make enhancements. And as evidenced by today's participation. We believe it's a great example as Bryant said of the industry coming together ultimately for their expense. The enhanced format the Wear and talked about and reward performance over the course of the entire season something our fans has consistently asked for. Every race matters and winning is more important than ever. The formats going to be implemented across all three of our national series. And finally the enhance format will allow states winning moments drivers are rewarded for their efforts. It minimizes green flags in eruptions from broadcast perspective again another win for our expense. So here's how to work. The race is going to be divided into three stages. Stage one the states will conclude on specific lap so every race fan every crew member every team member will know in advance what constitutes the states like. The race will be again. Pit road will be closed approximately five and five laps prior to stage ending and at the conclusion of stage one the top ten drivers are awarded points. Ten for first nine for second on down to one for tenth. In addition the winner of the stage or receive one point for the playoffs and I'll touch on that a little bit in a moment. The cars or remain on the track unreal like conditions. Will open pit road and pit stops will be covered lot. After the cars cycled through the pit stops the stage winner crew chief will be interviewed. Either in car over the PA or TV and then we'll start states to exactly the way the cars came off their road. States to exact same way of stage one. Top ten will be awarded points and moves one point for the playoffs awarded to the winner. The final stage of the race. Will be concluded just like races are today. Race points and purse are paid out based on the stage and forty points will be awarded to the race winner. We've eliminated bonus points for leading a lap leading the most laps we've built that into the overall point system. Over time still in play at the end of the race we're gonna make every effort to finish the race under green. The race winner as playoff eligible and receive five points freaks win for the playoffs. Again every race matters and drivers are rewarded for their efforts all race long. The playoffs how does this affect our playoff system we talked about the races let's talk about the playoffs. Here's what won't be changing eligibility remains the same it's based on race wins and points. The number of drivers and teams elimination structure all remains sixteen drivers down at twelve down at eight down before. You win and you advance to the next round the number of rounds remain the same with four the number of races with ten. Will recede after each rounds and will continue the tradition of heading into homestead Miami with the finale with Ford driver straight up for the championship. Here's the enhancements that we got. Our fans are spoken of will now declare regular season champion based on the most points earned through the first 26 races. We'll also award points for the playoffs based on regular season performance that will carry through the first three rounds of the playoffs. What you do in those first 26 races really matters not only to get into the playoffs but continue to move on each round. Race winds will be awarded with five points those also carried through the first three rounds and continue to build throughout the rounds as we head to Miami. Stage wins will be awarded one point. That one point we'll carry it through the playoffs is wealth through the first three rounds. Simply put. There are three ways to earn playoff points stage wins race wins in regular season playoff points. Using this example the driver had one stage win one race went. And led the regular season points they have 21 points at the start of the playoffs heading into Chicago. The bottom line for this is that it's about. Listening and rewarding the drivers listening to the fans having more moments and more importantly carrying this out through the entire season. That's NASCAR's chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell coming up on today's show. Chat with the International Speedway corporation's chief operating officer Joey Chitwood. We'll look at some driver reactions to the big announcement. Also slugger cloudy Austin Dillon strategy to Richard Childress racing wheel stepped in to analyze these changes and what they mean to the sport plus get a peek behind RC York her as far as the number threes preparation for 2017. Later in the show we'll look back ten years to an exciting Daytona 500 will hear from Jeff Gordon as he gets ready for racing in this weekend's Rolex 24 Daytona. And Clint Boyer has taken over the number fourteenth Stewart Haas racing Ford won't have him on the show as well as his boss Tony Stewart and much for. On this week's NASCAR live. The Daytona 500. It's the race that defines legends and as the world's only motor sports stadium Daytona International Speedway as the place that we defines what a race can be. You can experience it all and witnessed the next career defining NASCAR moment. At that great American race but hurry the 2016. Race sold out so don't miss out in 2070. I'm your health club head and joy and good two hours of country music at the. It's down from the biggest stars in Nashville. Along with offseason racing report from the motor racing network owned and hope we'll spotlight like that featured an interview. He works you up with me all year long and Americans feel. Talk. Coming up next ISE chief operating officer Joey Chitwood will react to NASCAR's announcement but first. Is NASCAR live on the motor racing network the voice of NASCAR. Here's NASCAR live now back of my bags. Thanks so much for joining us on this week's NASCAR live a moment ago. You heard from NASCAR's chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell on the changes to race formats and 2017. After that announcement Monday in Charlotte had a chance to catch up with International Speedway corporation chief operating officer Joey Chitwood. We start the conversation. About the role he had in coming up with the changes. Laughter give NASCAR a lot of credit you know I've been in the business for twenty plus years considerably in a room with both TV partners NASCAR teams drivers. I never really have that opportunity has semis I see so I think it was just took a great collaborative effort. It was definitely interesting their a lot of different points of view. I am and Alec this ports and with driver does fourteen or even NASCAR. But I think you already purchased right away with some basic things that we knew we wanted to accomplish. Which is. Our genes analyze drivers in terms of competition enhanced. There earlier parts of the race but also carrying on that sees an opportunity where it means something to get to Miami. And so I think for us when you put those up on the Wallace are taught you how we get there if it made a lot of sense either were there were moments when. I think in the inner workings Jeff Burton given recent you know what you convinced me cut and there was a time when I said to Danny Hillis who you know Denny you're right and I actually didn't think that way I thought the opposite. In and I think that was the beauty of this group that it was the right mix. And I don't know how the mix how we got her way but I I credits Steve O'Donnell really for pulling your body together setting the right tone. And us getting to place where I think we're really proud of this opportunity. I think it's gonna do exactly what we wanted to view the end of the day more opportunities and I think about other sports and and we can talk about three point want to do it I think about moments in in the map. And I think about a home run in the third inning. I think about an eagle on the ninth hole. You know those are things that catch your attention there's a pilot but there's risk reward there's opportunities here I think we've added a little more risk little more reward. And gets created that creates great sporting moments. And I think that's what's gonna happen when it let's back up for a moment when did you first hear this and what was your reaction because you know this sport is one of tradition. It's hard to convince people of change and investor clues us that are inside the sport as well when you got the first phone caller about that what Jeanne what are jemile think. And then alternately how did you did you work through the process so I was excited to be invited to participate. And and in here's the interesting thing is. I've been in the sport long time but you're talking to the guy who's willing to change everything I you don't I look at it this way and that is we always have to improve. We always have to looked as to what's next what are we could that's what our competitors during the other entertainment choices the other sports out there and so look do we do Daytona. Right Daytona rising OK and yes some people might say they like bleachers of mood and things like that but that's not gonna take this the next level in our sport. It's not just example look at what now Oscar's done to appear rude officiating. In terms of bringing computers technology and understanding penalties and an all those things you know you sit down you think about the evolution of the pit stop. And how much changed of who we go back to build four way vs new Medicare guns right I'd say to myself for us I think we always have to look to the future. And it's we respect the past but we have to be willing to make changes the right way the proper way and really with all the stakeholders in the room and that was the key. But I mean I'm in the sport I've been in the sport a long time. And I think we always have to look to change and yes a new wave of scorpion yes we want a new thin and we want all fans at the end today. We want great compelling entertainment and the into the I think this provides another opportunity for that too over the course of a 500 mile race. More in race moments to show the talent of our drivers and for them to your war report you know is it yours it inching you said there is that it if we have compelling racing if we have good competition. The wrestle take care of itself and its that there were getting back to that core. When you think about very complex situations and rounding up uninteresting group of stakeholders have to break it down to its simplest form. The end of the day it's incentivizing and rewarding risk. That's what sports is about it really mean I'm gonna try and steal second I'm gonna do these things it's it was gonna be reward to it it's so I think in this group we broke it down that that smallest element which is. Provide the drivers. More opportunities to be rewarded for their behavior. And when you broke attended that single line. You can build everything else off of it and I think that's what we did when you're in every time he does that fit just get that fixed that one that fits that statement. And again I give kudos to NASCAR for getting that group together. It was I enjoyed it from simply of hearing different points of view. And and to be swayed and Gilead. We've been of his longtime well I think we know everything and for a driver to tell me no no and then like you know what he's right and then through driver jeopardy could mean take you know what you convince me. I think that decision was a really good group that had the right ideas some place you've been around the sport for awhile as you mentioned you've been at the grassroots level nighter in the corporate arena. How has the fans wants and needs evolved. Over the last. 51015 years or so well. That's a great question I think that's that's one of the unique challenges of our sport trying to balance the competitive nature of our business. All of the elements that are sponsors want what are our fields want everybody has needs and so have we find a place to kind of gets commonality to it. But I see this massive all time. Our fans gonna continue to change every year. And so we'd be prepared for that if we're not prepared for change and we're not good stores or sport. Because we can't think doing the same thing over and over. He's what are fans want to because our fans changed and it changes and I know what I want from sports and other energy Richardson and it changes so we prepared as good stewards of sorts to the right weight. The right play in and really you know they what's the right metric we're gonna metric to in his day the key is we always gonna make the sport better. We can talk about admissions we can direct TV you know us sports that are sponsorship at the end of the day. Will this make Ers were better I firmly believe this will make our sport better if we maker sport better. People are gonna wanna consume it. They're going to consume it socially individually and TV and act track and and all those elements I think that's the key. Commonplace make the sport better this great way to do it in everybody's behind him. That's International Speedway corporation chief operating officer Joey Chitwood coming up next. What are some of the drivers think about these changes won't hear from Dale Earnhardt and Denny Hamlin coming up on that topic plus. What about the crew chief portion Marty's crew chiefs thinking about this slaughter lobby will also join the conversation. Now back of my thanks welcome back to NASCAR live after a NASCAR announced the format change Monday in Charlotte. Dale Earnhardt junior visited with the media and was asked what he thought about the changes for 2017 and beyond. I do like it yes I mean I think that this is a change ally what grandstand when he sent a clear gonna start from scratch is probably how he would do listen you know. This probably how it would just from the getting. If they did this and eighty's and ninety's when there every one of missiles and love love love and everything going on in this court. This would have been the greatest thing I mean everybody would have just thought this school's idea to be able to sit there watch it's not matter who their wallets are vermilion. Grayson for Tim points or less semi fab or whatever. That would have driven interest in ratings and everything else so I am buying an it is a 100% now think it's great ally that they do it for the standing in the truck series when they make it change for the cup series and it doesn't trickle down. Ask it feels a bit like it did assert some sort of reflects enormous significance of the series the I like to think combining the three series and he's got to have a changes. Giles a lot of you know it it's that we needed just as much as the cup series needs it needs interest so. If we can get our sponsors excited and and and our partners excited about what's going on our series the fans attending and it's August and ownership. New went on to explain what the teams have to do during the regular season for the first 26 races. Of this upcoming crises. What you wanna do. Is how to build as many points. As you can. For the playoffs. And the data carries and you know think about like when the playoffs start coming out of the hands. You know 4050 extra. Points. You know it has a good spring and everybody else a minute you're gonna that as a favorite he's instantly you know the last couple years we really head. You know. Sure favorite like one guy stand above the rest nobody could depicted and about you know. Oh really couldn't pick this your crown winner going into the chase and everyone is tasteless appears there. This wolf you know put other guys in some pretty unique situations and carry those points over in each round. And as gas or eliminated and those guys are eliminated with the moment when they're points. You know it's gonna change the complexity and another play also against Jason. We at Talladega. I'm ME China leaders last trying to get that bonus points. In each of those segments and you just agents can and especially you know obviously was to get the wind up to ten races in his most critical. Any concern that the fans will be confused with these changes diligent. I think the changes actually very subtle. Basically you're gonna Reggie Dawson street you know when they aren't we just actually kind of comforting. You're going to. Basically see Hussein you know the same format as far as they're who wins the race and how the races are decided has changed up the playoffs really does change at all. You're just gonna have tea breaks in every race they're going to be it's. Potentially rewarding to hear Travers says that Baghdad to meet creates interest and it's time in the race where before. But you're gonna he's running its in its final grand fifth time I just wanna close an affront. And now there's a reason. That he needs to be toward the front all the time and in particular instances in the race so we would go to Dover and run 400 miles. Can you just got to her through that office. John you know you run in charge you can let. Now there's a meaningless. To those laughs you know we're sitting there right now is less well let's relax I mean really the only ones that matter to start to finish but now everything sort of matters everything in the middle so. Guess the race and substance I thought it was messiness from a driving standpoint. So I'm really excited about it. I think it's just it's a real subtle change it would stand back and look at it. But it's it's gonna it's gonna bring some interest from a lot of things we do brings fan interest only there toward driver is just only and I think this Canada's most. Since she played it didn't Canada's most of the drivers and fans. Joseph Gibbs racing driver Denny Hamlin also spoke with a us about the changes. We ask you to explain to the core fan. How this is better than what we had before well I think that you know if their driver performs well I think we look at William Byron last year he. And dominated the regular season performed great all year. He blew an engine nothing of this on he's had to chase I think with this evening crude enough points to get through that ground. Because of how well he performed now I if anything I think. This puts the truest. Final four. That it should be on the racetrack not just people that survived through around her you know hey they're comfortable competition eliminated themselves. It's gonna have the four strongest cars I believe all year long in that final poorest and homestead so I think. You know there that the core fan this said that they'd like that before the chase came along here for the playoffs but this is more like that. And he also talked about if all these changes that NASCAR's been making over the last decade is hurting the sport you know I I think that in the race the race fans sometimes get so caught up in all my gosh the change. I mean there's owners' meetings and that every sport every single year in their constantly. Changing little aspect somethings that you don't see. Played out on the field somethings that you do. An end is just a NASCAR these changes you're gonna see in the racetrack and I guarantee the grace and they're gonna see better racing this year than they ever have in any other format. I don't know you know I know that at the playoffs for the chase that used to be. Was one of the best things that they ever did as far as crowning a champion made it more exciting. And they went to the elimination stuff south format. All great changes we all agree that those are great changes. So even though that you know there have been a lot of different things to enhance the way the fans watched the races this is is big is an erupting. That's Denny Hamlin coming up. Dallas Chevrolet Richard Childress racing crew chief. Slaughter lobby will join us to talk more about these changes are what they need to use the fan later in the show. Also look back at an exciting Daytona 500 finish from ten years ago. Why sport for the one true reality entertainment. Where a single dramatic moment had become prime. Slugger Levy joins us next this is NASCAR live on the motor racing network the voice of NASCAR. This NASCAR live. Now back of my bags. Welcome back to NASCAR lots of reds are spending your time with us here we've been talking about a lot of changes come and animal pipeline there for 2017. And affect a lot of folks gonna affect the driver gonna affect teams in effect bands. What about the crew chief element of this whole thing joining us on the hotline right now the crew chief for the number three Dow Chevrolet. Driven by Austin Dillon slaughter lobby is back on NASCAR live a slider. We're doing fantastic. Lots of news coming out of Charlotte on Monday. As far as the changes to race formats and all that lots to digest slots to get our arms around from the crew chiefs perspective just in general. What's your take on the changes what's your take on how this may affect what you do what you don't do over the course of a race. Well for sure it's definitely a move that 800% agree with that to move to make our sport better and to keep the fans. You know into our sport what we do what it will do is create global work for us as far as preparation for strategies it's something unique that would never had. There was a lot of times where we would have a broad range showering shall want Saturday night. And renewed it was accomplishing caution cover a lot 25 or thirty all depends where you're at. And then we would have to change our thinking strategies so no we know at some tracks would be left forty some tracks we leapt fifty. Have to wait so we know. Oh we will know before too long where these competition cautions or performance cautioned will be coming out. And we can work our strategy around its I've since meaning Kamal left at 6 o'clock. However or down probably about forty different scenarios and forty different thoughts that I have. Of powder that you looked at calling races you know what he do on their road. Do you say yourself up first segment one segment to what you say yourself up for the final segment that pays the most points as it is in many ways to look at it. I think each scenario OB track specific to day race marriage will be different how you call them and there's so many different options scenarios that. The engineers say in the war room and all the computers will be abuzz trying to figure out the best way to overcome this change in. And this seems that worked hardest that it will overcome this challenge the best so. We hear the Richard Childress racing will put a lot of effort into planning and designing on how to call a straight to our actually should say monster energy cup. Rates properly. You don't. You know what's interesting is that. You have the news and you said you've come up with forty scenario do you have a computer program that you can put. Various scenarios in and it will give back what you should do what you should and it. We have a lot of tools available to us here Richard Childress racing and probably. Won't divulge exactly what we can do what we can't do what we have a lot of schools that will help us extra little under the data. Now part of this obviously. We're talk and sees a long points were talking playoff points. An opportunity to to get bonus points quote unquote bonus points over the course. Of a race and over the course of a stage will that. Obviously it would dictate pit strategy and it may be changed some strategies that you have but what about the incentive to go get those points over the course of an event. Well as they raced team in the league average and you wanna you wanna win every practice you wanna sit on the poll you will lead ever let you want to win everything available. So that the better your car is. The ball points you gonna get so. It's obviously everyone's goal to get everyone's point but the main thing is you still gonna have a fast race car the best engine best recruit. And the right strategy and nothing has changed in that aspect. As far as the crew chief and what we're going to the restrictive it was what is changed is we know there will be two additional caution that you can bank on. You have to work your strategy around that so coming up with a proper strategy will be key I'm sure will we get to a place like pocono. The caution. The first a full discussion will be at lap forty we know that number already. And I wouldn't be surprised one bit of people start pinning. Around laps six or seven. Of that race will be at pocono short pitting him and getting on a up fuel strategy that is different more solich who would federal courts so there's a lot of different ways to. Manipulate the system to understand the best strategy for your race team and there's going to be so many different people sewed so many different mindset. And thought Republicans call the race that you gonna see a lot of different people being on different scenarios more so than you have in the past. How many scenarios do you work off of in a normal race before these changes came down the line what's going through your head when you're trying to figure out to a pit do and not bad I mean what kind of strategy do I employ here. You keep like a handful of scenarios in the back to your brain to figure out if something happens then we'll do this or do that. Well you do but a lot of it depends on the tire degradation you know tired tire Wear is key and you know we have less downforce. We have a schedule that's changing at a racetrack from last time on the track so. You have to understand your race car and your race team better. More so than ever haven't passed that we have multiple scenarios that would run through and of course they're changing every laps. As the race goes on because things do change Assurant you know you have whether. Whether surveyors that you keep in the place in you know you have scenario is if you're running in the top ten verses if you run and eighteenth or twentieth error. Or you may be in different scenarios that if you have misfortune went down a lap. There's a lot of things that. You just also on the pit box aboard Selma pit on lap 74 you just don't do that award the so much more. Scientific engineering behind it's that it's pretty amazing. Like a social we have. To catch up with all the data input into plays it's pretty amazing in today's world. Talking with slugger Levy the crew chief for the number three Dallas Chevrolet is Richard Childress racing Austin Dillon about a month away from getting the race season under way. House preparations going for the Daytona 500 on the number three car. It's cool really good five on the car has sort of been wrapped in and painted over and cleared. We start to build that bad Boyer and in October so we've had a lot of time on its. It's been proven were happy with a so. That's awaiting that in the back of course but he got a motor and it and it's a bonus that'll play tomorrow in the in the class cars are awaiting the engine. From these yards in that will put it and we're going to Phoenix to test would load up Friday. With two cars so looking forward all that so things that are really really going good. You know we do have an extra weekend off for another week to prepare should say. With the Daytona race being a little bit later in the season so it gives us another week it would take full advantage of it and a make ensure that. Were prepared as much as we can work full downforce mode right now. And the body hanging department I think they're working on Phoenix primary cars right now as we speak so. Pretty far along that's tore through the loop on Friday the thirteenth they promote the couple new templates that. Sit industry back today Cuba would vote overcome that and I'm moving forward. And just can't wait to go to Daytona we load on the fifteenth to February and bag meant to be here for you know. Before I let you go towards the end of last year. It seemed like the number three team you and Austin were banging on all eight cylinders yet made the playoffs. And things were headed in the right direction what's the vibe you get going into 2017. Will that will those successes and that momentum be able to and be rolled over into this next racing season. Torso and hope so we've talked about was some good good. Topic surge some good parts and pieces on a race cars over the winner. You don't have stores took a fair amount of downforce off our cars they changed the the rear toe with a wrist who rules other changes direction process so there's a lot of new changes that NASCAR has implemented. For the race teams over the winner and then we hoped to be on top of that curve we come back as far as myself and hospital were also signed up for next three years. Most of my engineers in the key players of the number three doubt Chevrolet are all signed up so work. Building on a future man but the bottom line is you got to win in and you got to perform when you when you make the playoffs so. Where row already for the task at hand and get a Victory Lane is the biggest thing on a checklist. Here recently a lot of folks are saying that it's gonna take us to the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend to know we're headed in the right direction. Is that still the case with the changes that are coming down the line or if not when we you have an idea if you and Austin are headed in the right direction. Well I would say were the West Coast we get after I've got together and passable for march and that desolate porch in right direction but you know with the way the schedule is now. The bonus points man you gotta get as many bonus points to me as you can. Through the course of the first 26 races but it into the day you don't wanna lose sight. Aware you are at the end of this third segment that pays the most points so. It's easy to gig reading go after bonus points but still look into the days segment replace the most but. Mean on paper you did when the first segment and the second segment and finished fifteenth. In the first segment and and you could still make as many points as the got to win the overall race so. Has brought us there is a lot of paperwork in. Computers a barn and up right now calculators and notebooks notepad so. And so a lot of different twist that's really exciting is not but melanoma or I mean it's you've got to get after going to be aggressive and it will show if you don't know what you're doing and on top of that pit box we will definitely show up so. You gotta be prepared in itself a lot of work and preparation and I've wanted to ready for the task. Yes my friends the risk vs reward Porsche alive and well in NASCAR racing slugger thanks for the time appreciate it look toward to seeing you and the boys down at Daytona here about a month. Ever created in sir thank you thank you that's slaughter lobby crew chief for Austin Dillon net Richard Childress racing coming up we've got a NASCAR live Daytona re wind next. Is NASCAR live. Now back of my thanks. NASCAR live rolling on we're so glad that you're taking the opportunity to spend your time with us what became. Was over Stewart Haas racing earlier this week he spoke with the new driver of the number fourteen Stewart Haas racing Ford Clint Boyer. Mention not being overwhelm our overall by getting into what you're doing but now with two of the fourteen Goran Tonys is true that made jays. It's pretty special it's also you know ultimately it's it's a best suck him ever had everybody knows that down you know certainly I know that I'm very aware of that let's. I don't think you can ever have a better fit factor I really don't. You know if I hitting any other to Suu Kyi city any other seed in the garage area. I really don't think that I would fit in any any other culture meaning bettors and then mr. Haas and more importantly in this fourteen car. You know the only thing that sucks about me this is just don't have Tony out of racetrack anymore you know. There's. Does a great deal of entertainment they went in it's only been on the racetrack whether it was winner ace is there it is there anything in between that. It was always nonetheless entertainment. The calendar flipped when you first got to go poker run the shop and you've been there before horse first thing you did when that was official. This funny the first couple times it went in there you know all over the season I was I was in there. The guys really you can sell it into a militant they give IC does is season was over there. I OK good you know but I was the same way you didn't didn't really know where you fit in yet and you know you. Once the season was ovarian and you know Mike's Colin and let me go to think get fitted for seats here you know bruises fusion handled and where you want to meet its community this. That level love. The little things that make up the difference is this through the roof that plays likes your costs mean it really is do you go down their prime example I was there last weekend and they. Through last week they wanted me to. Wanted to know about my ship through such a big deal to make me out of all of this there was sit creative guard. Yeah because that's the way I am. I get down there and my man has like eight different shippers on the on the floor ward braverman is try and insist fewer items as they can you want as is bleak view line is is being really wanna take. I am this do a lot of decisions they are what really drew Baird minister today that's. I think we have dialed in there and they're right gear shift handle for myself. In my success this year. If the if not we have play extras to go around. A lot of changes come for the 2017 season we've got monster coming aboard as the new title sponsor the news even lower downforce package. Format changes what do you think we can expect this year you know assemblies to realize different. But it's it's still. You can change whatever you wanna change. Consistency. And and speed. You know is this is the key to success in and eating in motorsports you've got to be fast we can only count and if you're not. There is any neat format change anything else is gonna. Fix your problem you've got to be fast every single week on every single track and by the way there's a lot of different tracks. Lot of different acclamation from different tires to. You know our our different downforce packages as we go from. You know plate tracks and intermediate track and even a short tracks I mean there's just so many things you've got to adapt to his race car driver and as a team that's. Clint Boyer and we also spoke this team owner Tony Stewart. I have a switch from Chevrolet the Ford was coming along and the learning curve for SHR. I think dirty has been coming learning. You know a lot of the tools that were using I mean are different than what we have the force we've had to switch a lot of things and approaches the way that we've done things. Do you listen to severe head up processes on much smoother than what we thought so you know I'm sure there's going to be some more transition to win of the season. Mean when you get to cars on the racetrack it's it's still the same process goes through in the balance right and what the problems. Don't feel like her injuries and Tony also spoke about the goals of Stewart Haas racing when they started eight years ago yes we did I mean obviously you know the first goal is to get. You but to the best part of the whole thing is that the first time I really got to sit down with gene has goals is to finish on the lead lap races. And I looked very much about a preacher we can accomplish that for you so to know that that's what the goal was eight years ago when. Now we've had two championships and you know we've got four really good teams under under one roof. I'm proud of where we were weak the weak still and the direction we're going and then yeah I mean every I think every team wants to. You know he self sustainable ones and not have to rely on now. Organization. I guess it was a great partnership for Hendrick Motorsports and I and I. Very appreciated in value every moment that we had with the skies but you know you you want to at some point say hey we can we can do this on around I think this. So what is on the horizon for Stewart Haas racing I still wanna get a second expend any team full time. Is what I wanna do that you don't right now we're gonna focus on our partnership reported an extraordinary job. That's Tony Stewart as he spoke with him earlier this week. When we return Jeff Gordon is gonna stop by to talk about this weekend's Rolex 24 at Daytona. The Daytona 500. Now back to Mike Bagley thanks for hanging out let us on. This week's edition NASCAR live this weekend the roar of engines will be back at the world center of racing with the running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. For a great story from that race here's MR and veteran announcer Jack a road where they page from the pack. Nowadays it's commonplace for a monster energy NASCAR cup drivers to dabble in the upcoming Rolex 24. Some will tell you did it knock the rust off after NASCAR's offseason. But for one driver back in 1963. Daytona sports car race was his springboard. To a Daytona 500 victory. Dwayne Tiny Lund was a journeyman driver in NASCAR. This six foot 5270. Pounder. Had run only a 131 grand national races in his career and didn't have a single top five finish so it wasn't surprising. He never ride for the upcoming Daytona 500 next year. But tiny was in Daytona when the three hour continental. The sports car forerunner to today's Rolex 24 held their annual effect. Marvin Payne action Daytona Beach native and driver for the wood Brothers team was Zander driving Hamas or Roddick. But during practice for the continental race. Marvin lost control down the backstretch and ended up in turn four his car upside down and fully engulfed in flames. That's when London and four others intervened. BC they pulled an unconscious pants from the burning wreckage and saved his life. Now with their regular driver hospitalized with burns the wood Brothers settled on tiny as their replacement driver for the great American race. Lund started twelfth and the race and thanks to an unconventional pit strategy employed by the wood Brothers. Easy they went the entire distance on a single set of tires. Tiny Lund found himself the winner of the Daytona 500. For his heroics London before others did save Marvin match received at Carnegie medal of honor for heroism. Tiny lost his life in 1975. In a crash at Talladega. But in 1994. Daytona International Speedway named its 50000. Seat backstretch grandstands. In his memory. We're pages from the past I'm Jack. Thank you Jackie speaking of the Rolex 24 Daytona big NASCAR name is gonna be strapping in and competing. Jeff Gordon will be a part of the proceedings what are Cain talk with Jeff about the upper. Things are Cam Newton is dead homestead. You know last year. You know I was hesitant to say I never be back to restart it because I was open for some opportunities like this. It's even more exciting. No no he's back but Wayne Taylor racing like that in 2007. But. Knowing that cadillacs introduces you carded a prototype series. Getting back to reduce you know this form of racing extremely excited me. First thing I thought it looks mobile it doesn't let that's that's exactly what I said to my kids when I showed him the spy photos the first time. You know I to me ever since I drove that Formula One car. You always. Hope dad when dad did it drive. You know car like this that has this kind of technology. And office just after racing in the experience from the driver's standpoint and had a chance to drive the car. A couple of weeks ago. Jim just a few laps so impressive so impressive so hey that's that's fun and going to Daytona to test a couple weeks on the court about. What do you remember most about 57. 2007 race compared to what you've been doing for years week to week on the cup side what jumped out idea. A lot you know first by enjoyed the cars a lot of fun to drive in the tech cars. A little bit different in this car this car you know has more downforce says. More power as well as as big carbon fiber brakes so I'm you know it's gonna be different just to drive but what I remembered so much about that experience was. You know how hard you how easy have to take it leaving the pits on. On cold tires those cars are so stiff aside laws of the tires are stiff and there's not a lot of grip for the first laps that you get against the Braves get the tires warmed up. And the other thing was. The rain you I was out in the car when it started raining. Can that really got my attention and I got out as fast as I kid because edges you know just felt so. Out of my comfort zone so I'm hoping and you can typically testers the second time for a minute of the Deseret. I can figure out in the not to. I have to call for back get your typical for the group. The weather looks absolutely great for this week and at Daytona rain should not be a problem pro death folks it's all the talk we have for this week's NASCAR live as we talked about earlier in the show.
