This is NASCAR live on the motor racing network the voice of NASCAR. This is NASCAR live. Back to your holes Mike Bagley. Thank you so much for joining us this week on NASCAR alive today were looking back at the best of 2016. In nay. NASCAR runs the longest race of the year with the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte motor speedway this year Martin George junior dominated the 400 lap race. And Lawrence came Coen talked with Truex after the event in NASCAR live face to face interviews. Martin Truex junior classic movie notes for you I needed Turk I want just two and a half miles to go for Martin Truex junior and everything stayed right he did hosted move from vehicle played a silver were market. What junior he's going back. The victory. Your wish I was I would call a popular when meaning I don't think it's an exaggeration to say everybody. For at least the majority of the industry was behind you what's that like for you. To see that and were there any surprises in terms of. Congratulations you got. Yeah there was any surprises it was kind of the typical guys that are usually pretty nice and you know it's just it's fun to see some means a lot to me that. You people respect me in the garage area and happy when we think. You have success and feel like we do deserves as we work hard so it is just it's a special feeling when here. You're competitors. Yeah the guys that you go toe to toe with each weekend here in the browser. Perhaps before you went success so I don't know assist them. He has one of those things give you a lot of right here and we try to do things right and obviously in. Your. 588 laps excuse me miles led a single race in NASCAR history what sit like nanny part of the history books. Really amazing you know to think about it you know. All the great drivers have come all of our heroes in NASCAR. Certainly a lot of my heroes that have never vetoed the idea. You know invented the in that kind of company. It is set a record that this never happens that is just it's a crazy feeling and it's it's hard to believe we could do something. Especially like that in today's NASCAR was so competitive so differently laps. Do it yelling and Tony sixty news and Mays and it's funny when you IC some stumps on Twitter post 55 was dominated race ever worked or Charlotte so. Such a tough track just goes to show you when you hit on there you hit it right. You can you can dominate. This year in France are racing starting aligns with Ted Gibbs racing. You guys lean on them for a lot taking hints that into consideration do you still consider friends are raising a single car team and if not how would you just I'm just a tough question because. We guess we arsenal cart team because our owner only owns our car but yeah I mean week. We feel like. We're just gives car so yeah I mean it's it's as you look at it we have the advantages of innocent Martin's team yet we can move quickly make changes passed it we will try something. Our cars are we build and you are we can use move fast you'd rather quickly. The same time we have the relationship with the other for its cars and expertise in all the information transfer enough clothes that. Is a huge advantage. So I think is the best of both worlds really. It was just a great position to do things differently but yet still have the strength of a powerhouse team because. You really can't win races consistently in a series unless you have. Teammates and information and wind tunnel time and just it takes so much to make these cars go fast is so technical nowadays. All that engineering information we give you ZRD and Toyota and yeah all those things put together. Does what it takes bit and we have the added advantage of being used in all parts even do things quickly. Looking back at your years ago when you're like go from NWR. And then fast forward to now could you predicted you'd be where you wire and do you feel like you're in the best position you've never been in your. There. You never know what's gonna happen and you can't really predict things you know we were in a good place and though we are things are going well and then suddenly you know. It's over and you don't you know you don't really know what's next then you know have been forced him to win with a great group of guys that worked hard to believe in me. You know it took us awhile to get this thing don't reverse your together we were awful I thought doesn't get fired. Maybe you just you never know he has got to always worked hard always do your best and and give a 110% and we just failed to figured out as we go and I keep. Saying how great my team is I really feel that way I feel like it's it's the best position I've ever been in this most consistent I've ever been as far as turning up for a and I feel like we're still getting better so it's it's a great feeling we're just trying to savor the moment you work hard and probably take advantage of what we are going on right now for us. Martin's six foundation has been able to do so many great things over the years I had to go to cal for the cause it was incredible. How does that Randy Shannon here ability to help people make. All the racing stuff in part perspectives. Well yeah it was great seeing their thanks for sporting and again as always and it's just you don't really that big cat walk in when we dirt from Acer Asus Tom. I don't you know how to explain the feeling that weekend we see this instantly see the impact if they make on their. Their community and their friends in the hospital when nurses and just to show their strength and how hard around the fight. And we learned so much for men that it helps everything we do you know it helps me race or else just. When you're having a bad day was a bad happens it's just. To see what they're going through their outlook on life in the way they look at things I'm telling you they have more fun and enjoy life and have. A better positive mental attitude and most people that have nothing wrong with them. Then there's the good life just like the wind and it's just it's inspiring to be around them to learn from them to you just. This really what it's all about for us and distance virus and I wanna do war. But the more we do that more that we get from his sister is it's crazy that they could give us more than you know we could raise millions of dollars a year never. Never give them what they give you enough so it's just found it's a pleasure to go to do that it's a blessing and we're gonna do as long as we can try to try to make it. It's Smart to X ginger as you talk with Cancun after his dominating performance in this year's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. Coming up on the best of 2016 Tony Stewart will join us to talk about retirement a later. Al Larson on winning his first Sprint Cup Series race. The Daytona 500. It's the race that defines legends and is the world's only motor sports stadium Daytona International Speedway as the place that we defines what a race convene. Back to your holes Mike Bagley from back to the best supporting sixteen on NASCAR live on July 5. We were able to talk with Tony Stewart about his final season and his plans after retirement we started when a phone call from Nate. In Indiana State got married and that it. He had just won the sabres on regulation on the record Aden now several years great racially vendors and I want to know next year since you're gonna be live and highlight in my retirement do you have any plans or in any gracious and southern Indiana like outside an inner anywhere like that. You know I have even looked at the schedule yet but I think you know once we get through homestead this year mean my focus right now is getting into the end of the year and you know focus and a 100% of my energy on that and united next year's going to be until just the fun part about it for me right now I don't know what I'm gonna do yet I don't know where monitoring so I don't know what Carson monitor race. You know that could be the front purchase winner that's going to be. That's going to be Mark Warner project this figured out what the place schedules going to be for next year venom gets definitely. Certainly on my radar I wanna I wanna try to get back to browns town I wanna. Wanna get back in late model wanna run a modified some racists. You deaf women run that we expert Carl lot next year. But it just don't know what to schedule going to be and where we're going to be recent quite yet. Some folks hearing you into that question would say you've got. The rigors of running the cup car and that's at 36 weeks schedule with obviously the grind in the middle of all the business. Elements that are attached to it but sounds like. You wanna do as much if not more on a different level what's the difference between the two what are you get at a race in those other kind of cars. I'd I've always liked are racing I mean had you not Cassini. You'll see me run very few paper races this sending picture. All the recent on the reduced primarily going to be on dirt that's. That's just something I've always been passionate about I'd love dirt track racing. You know I love I love what we do at the cup car but it's you know the hard part for the last eighteen years as. Here are grueling thirty week schedule you you're on the route over 120 days a year. You know this year it's it's it's kind of worked out you know when I got hurt or that's been a lot more time and Indian and and the guys it's shop and you know Bogut is my crew chief is has been very very. Generous in letting me take time to come home to Indiana more and. I think Alice 121 days total last year at my house in Indiana. And this year I'm over 45 days are ready just to today. So you know almond joy in being home got a lot of projects that I've been wanting to do my property that I haven't had time to do and and that's. That's the big difference in the big differences. You know how much time do I wanna be at the cup track and and I'll be there is much like you know I love being there in the first eight races I think. This year were really good indication of what next year's going to be like form am I enjoyed being there enjoy being around the guys. I enjoyed being able to spend time with the with each team's center just worried about my current fourteen car. And done some looking toward that but at the same time I mean on Friday night coming up stick around for all Miami watched practice now may get on the plane and. Flight somewhere close sneering charisma sprint car on Friday uniter you know. Not even come to the track on Friday may be some weekends and come Saturday for practices and single flight order race and come back and let. You know pretty much as many Sundays I can't come and try to be a cup track and and and be at the race at Tora wannabe. Let's go back to the phones lots of folks want to chat with you including Jeanette. In Ithaca, New York Jeanette hello. I don't blunder right and bloody your biggest fans. I'd wonder you're going to bringing even happened emotional home that is we your fans are going to be. I have a feeling my fans are going to be more emotional and I didn't unfortunately. And I hate that part of it that's that's the part of this I don't like that. You know I'm I'm kind of looking at it from the standpoint that you know I've this was kind of the first half my life and and that's start next year amount due to start the second half my life and I have a feeling it's gonna be every bit as much fun if not more fun than. And what the first 45 war but you know it. I'm looking forward to it I mean I'm I'm looking forward to run and strong and finish out this year the best I can run then and given everything I got to it. But I'm I'm looking forward to says to have a different schedule next year being able to do different things and things like going to to Monica I wanna guillotine hospital Monaco Grand Prix next year with the Formula One team and. Know many Indianapolis today at the brickyard and and you know just talk until my wanna come back here next year further the vintage car races that they have it's an awesome week and haven't. You know with our schedule we just can't we can't be here can't be a part of it so it's things like that that I've never had the opportunity to do in the last eighteen years that now. Having the schedule allow me to do so I. I don't think I'm gonna be is the most I don't know I might be surprised I might get to instead be a train wreck for all I know about them. You know I I still think it's you know I'm open for our fans and open it. You know maybe this'll broaden their horizons as well one and the people that really want them. Come see us racing world will have a schedule of what we're racist we're gonna go around next year and so. Hopefully when we're in an area like like he worked for going to be up around you worked and we can. You know if we ever spur partner for example you know our candles to be able to come maybe catch us and watch a straight something different to just a stock car. Before I let you go won't be too long before weren't el Dora. We got to see yet there turn and so will you be hands on that that race for the NASCAR Camping World truck series. Are always am. It is the hard part is cited the hard part is not getting the on the equipment it's keeping me from breaking the equipment while moss. Yeah hopefully we can. I think I broke everything that we had we had that we had the call on some favors that somebody's bringing some heavy equipment for a summary staved them. The united I think I think it will be off from the chairman how was reported the truck Greece and we have big block modified. Come in this year from the northeast too so. It's it's going to be an awesome week and I can't report. That's Tony Stewart back on July 5 2060. Coming out on the best of 2016 Kyle Larson we'll talk about his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win at Michigan and later Jeff Gordon jones'. Why sport for the one true reality entertainment. Happy holidays to you and yours from all of us here motor racing network this week. Looking back at the best of 2006 team let's flashback to August. August thirtieth to be specific how Larson joins us on the heels of his win at Michigan International Speedway he started out by describing the closing laps of the pure Michigan 400. Yeah I heard of that era is you know. I got to believe they're kind of your figured out constantly and come out that it you know that's that's how how it goes from mean. In record has been collecting now be leading late race and also about ERR starts so crowded you know. Expecting that to happen but that thankfully it didn't. We don't parlay that first win in the end to the get the monkey off my back up. You know we now that we know we got efforts another way they'll come up a lot easier. You talk about the last restart it looked like everybody was having a hard time. Struggling to get traction and swing in the back ends out involvement off each other how crazy was that last restart. Yet it. Yet taken off for the was pretty intense there. You know chased and I we both are tired really that. And then you know we are in purse from behind. You know again less traction. On the earlier you know. That the panel that chant chanting negatively didn't. You think we've got in the act of oppression and Europe kept personally kit. Because it may be pulled underneath mean in it which erased an eternal one bet. He stuck with me in personal. Gaining great person coming out to lead in your vote really won the race after that. Yeah you can't thank him announced that. Here it is stepping intense there you know that straightaway for sure. It seemed like when your car got got out in front by itself that it was just a rocket ship out of the car behaved in traffic compared with no traffic if Rania. Yeah and I heard it was kind of weird news is sometimes I get tightened traffic. And then you know sometimes aren't loose I can really get a good. Gives you know four of that. You know. Lorraine clean air no definitely out of better bet. Yes page. In traffic on entry out prime looser and the middle but I. You know behind somebody close to exit annihilated I get tie. Is unity artists. China searcher. Or against green area he maximum downforce and here is karma. It's need to run Jeter and close the back bumper of people and are you closer than we normally can went the current rules package that there was signed you know we had a list. In the corner which whose you're not completely. And I had to do and Michigan in years and force up the packages refining and hopefully. Mostly NASCAR and you know all the drivers and teams as learn enough that we can go back and then yeah maybe make changes do you make it better fracture. Well since you brought it up you mentioned the how does that had that package feel verses the packets from 2016. And on the other side of that save Etsy couple changes what those changes but he. Well I don't know what to change it'd be I guess you think your Tran. You know look to. Yes slow the corner speed down a little bit you know kind of a bit more in the driver's hands. Emeka cars that are harder drives so. You reading get around Michigan this year at you know the Jun sixteen packaged let. I did do you know well we test there earlier in the year. And you don't differ about two hours before the rain came and now that's pretty much wide open with that is the 2016 package so the most fun on me you got blurred out or staff and mean able to. You'll have to listing and try to Carla Maher or submit name or Simon in Munich Q you can run. You know here's the car behind somebody you can you can get closer to them without having the you know air after their car affect yours as well. You mentioned the corner entry speeds. I saw some speeds that were 200 plus sometimes 210 plus. What's that sensation you get in the cockpit. And how much would you like to knock off of that corner entry. Well I mean I don't mind on pastor. In the corner is on the can slow ourselves down. Flown a mile per hour down in the center of the corner so. Cute or mean vs 200 mean doesn't feel any different though. Am expressing this in because it's so big and smooth. You don't get that sensation as he is it lets you edit. You know like Bristol earned over selling like that so we know much slower so. Yeah I mean and I don't know I and a NASCAR doesn't. Pryor on the top speed to be much more than it is or was this past weekend but. The big wreck happened the big hit to me happen in the corners they don't happen on the sheriff got a mind I don't mind on faster. The follows at 1802. NASCAR colonel in Portland Oregon colonel you're all the Kyle Larson on NASCAR line. RA hey Kyle congratulations on your win last week. Thank you. Ally asked here. Why you all right I'll highlight like Natalie try to do you know what what that they cannot now why don't why he'll try to conquer that highlight all the time. Nobody else's nobody else. Is that there's says. You know I can't then you terrifying clean airing in grip and you know a lot of times in the script. Is up top so. He I came term rate and dirt tracks up for the track constantly change in. Each and every lap in he yours has the search around her for new lion cut. I think you're getting that I've taken from dirt track that first stock cars. Yeah I hate running the bottom eight. He's running the same rate flying every elaborate cook. Yeah on your carpet trying to define gripped and racetrack and a lot of time that the top. That was Kyle Larson from August 30 after his first ever win in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. More of the best of 2016. Next this is NASCAR live on the motor racing network they'll voice of NASCAR. Please use NASCAR live. Back to your holes Mike Bagley so great to have you witnessed this week on NASCAR live that they were looking back at the best of 2016. On October 11 Jeff Gordon stop by the MR and studios to top of us about his new book and being back in the car for Taylor earned. Hard junior well it was religious a need you know Rick. In the team nobody expected. For junior to step away but. At the same time you know he we were looking how to to fulfill that need there and in. Alex Bowman did New Hampshire I was out of the country as a France and you know and I think when you look at the balance between. Sponsor in the team and in relationships. And in not knowing how long junior is going to be out of me recently you know without just maybe a couple of weeks. And so. You know I I guess I've been out the car not too long I think that they felt like it and that's a natural that when we look at all scenarios and so like Italy I was happy to come back I thought it was going to be for one or two races I was excited cam Indianapolis but when it turned into a lot one and I was wait a minute let's look at the schedule here because I'm actually. Retired. And Alex did such a great job at New Hampshire. You know in in in. You know he and I kind of balance in about it seemed to work pretty well from the team. You've also been busy. The last two years while a lot of people may not have known. That as a working with Joseph garner on the book called Jeff Gordon his dream drive and destiny. Thank you for the advance copy I've been I've been going through here I've been reading some stories are quite frankly. I never knew about you what was the purpose of this book and what are you trying to accomplish. For your fans and those folks out there with this book. I purposely. Wanted to wait until line to win. I was gonna stop driving. You to do a book likeness and Joseph garner somebody that at a spent a lot of time with over the years actually my stepfather in Joseph. Became pretty close and talked about one day doing a project so when they came to me I said yes I wanna do that but I wanna make sure that it's done. Date coincides with my final year in the car what I knew that that was going to be 2015. Dan you don't Joseph and I started really working hard together to. You know share stories. Share kind of my philosophy. I'm in experiences. In the car out a car. And we start creating a long list of people to go and interview and talk to it is to build this. And I'm really proud of that I agree with you I think there's a lot of stories in there and in things that happened in my life that a lot of people are going to be surprised with. Even fans that are diehard fans that are gonna say while I had no idea that. You know that's how. Jeff stepfather and his mom that that's I had no idea then you know this happened between. Ray ever damage effort Jimmie Johnson Jeff and Rick Hendrick all these different dynamics and I'm really really proud of the result it's turned anchors. Before that you go you just wrapped up your first season as telecast are on NASCAR on fox what's it like being on the side of the microphone now. It it's fun I really like it you know. I what I do something I I wanted to go well I put a lot of effort into it doesn't matter what it is speakers. You know I don't like to fail at anything in and I don't like to be disappointed whether and I critique myself a lot so. The first you know fully few races that I did man I was stressed how often I was. You put a lot of pressure myself and in in really nervous. And Dan as the season went on. I got more more comfortable and I really enjoyed it I think it's the best transition. To move out of driving for me because. This series NASCAR lives. Back to your holes Mike hardly. Thanks for taking time out of your data join us here on NASCAR live today we're looking back at the best of 2016. Jimmie Johnson joined us after winning his seventh title on November 29. I ask him when you start appreciating the legacy of Dale Earnhardt Richard Petty and their seven titles. Our permanent member Richard wanted to watch a little better. NASCAR racing. Going up the current Californians. But it it was really maybe just look at Daytona 500 or pop on. On who we didn't have a lot of access to itself. Without a doubt king world and in each of their orders. But when it's time we actually North Carolina. You can imagine that the late nineties that's. When things really started thinking for me. Living here in an aspiring to be at NASCAR driver on the receiving in the history of success but you have are almost around dale. Department probably submit in the court it's Allison the respect that Ron had four outs for dale. It certainly crept into my point of view I bet you Dale Junior. Armed security when Australia because her Rockport Maine as some army. So you know exclude certain come together for trying to late nineties early 2000. When you when you first got in the sport. You see champions like Richard like dale. You head chefs and and you had yet to even score a win yet what was. What was your observation and and what was your perspective. Of some of the big names in the sport when you entered it and who were the big names says that you were called when you first got in sport. He had just definitely. Do you want those music data or four of the fact he came from a dirt racing background in the different form of racing. I gave me a lot of hope there's an offer. Driver that I need to get a chance of won't absorb vehicles. Armed but you couldn't ignored builds here Rusty Wallace Mark Martin. Are realists just goes on and on all those those names from that generation and legendary names. I don't like it also sit at my first cup race at Charlotte motor speedway. I'll my left eroding it was a total awe because Rusty Wallace Mark Martin built here or right out of like growing up extra bully of the so. You know that those mean. What were big spender big today. And I just remember those guys being. In older obviously in distinguished and these stop enough for me to be in the situation I guess our normal order. Are it's wild I don't see myself. As I saw them you know they exist. I'm a bit they seemed older horse study published in them were successful and I have I ever would be an actual feel like dynamite today which is wild. You know the conversation Jimmy in the sport. Sometimes. It involves ill cup guys going to the X unity series and and that whole conversation and one of the things emerges from that is. How those expanding series guys are able to learn from these cup drivers he's cut veterans that come down. And and basically play in that series for you when you first entered and your your racing around the rusty Wallace's and mark Martins and all that. What things were you able to pick up that certainly conversation wise off the track but on the track what did you observe and how did you learn from what they did. It was just great measuring stick for our as a competitor and even then it wasn't. Exactly fair. I'm. And while it picked up there what's in the step up it was like five to ten it's just step up and be competitive week in and week out but you know that you didn't have that upper chipping. We've been dabbling in it also the sponsor interest. On the two different generation now unfortunately. I'm paddling the other way aura a mentoring what what NASCAR is doing the liberty. Of the cup involvement. It's like I can permit generations of drivers where you get through. Each city series and be noticed and recognized and he didn't need to show up with that X sponsored by ought to get that chance. In which the cup influence in the cup drivers exceptions shouldn't be serious. On the edge it I think it's paid the price stood to play a lot so high. But it's hurt deep. He opportunity young guys to come in development to write really keep them coming onto the systems so. Are you seeing that it could have kept prisoner usually. So you know I'll I am in favor with NASCAR ticket right now across the truck and action series. Why she race in the NASCAR XP users. Largely because it takes such a serious commitment to be competitive. And I don't I don't wanna make time to. I'm on my Freetown might enjoy. Ought to have a life outside of preaching talent out like my kids aren't. You know that the money required competed about what will go after. It's it's guys perhaps like. It's like another another cup program in just are does not presidents. That's Jimmie Johnson as we spoke on November 29 after we shut the season down. 2016. Folks just gonna shut the showdown for this week thank you so much for joining us. Thanks to all of the crews and the drivers the officials and most importantly you the listener.
