We saw the tweet from Dale Earnhardt junior shoveling dollar bills into a furnace on for three races we saw quite a few incidents on the track yes three weeks this year with a hole. Have a misnomer there wasn't a lot of speed for a lot of laps as track cleanup was under way in all three series. Just an unusual weekend we've seen these anomalies before and had nothing to do it our new rules in stages and sponsors. The got a lot of TV time to clean up crew did but it never really just came down to the fact of those hard racing. Guys made mistakes and it didn't matter whether the rookies had the elbow over the on the ball from the rookies that make mistakes it was this series veterans making mistakes. But in the end we had all three series not one of the three series head twenty cars. On the lead lap at the checkered flag I most of them at the end of the race there was a stat that. Only three cars are only five cars were not involved in some kind of incident in your in the respective races you know again they were specifically no reason why this happened again we can talk about a rules package change new X eighty series. That may have caused some Rex would truck series ran the exact same car the cup surgery and the exact same car it was just one of those weekends where is a full moon style weekend. Were all three series had problems. Kurt Busch wins the Daytona 500 the first for him if for being the bride's made three times and his crew chief. Tony Gibson goes to Victory Lane the Daytona native. Finally pay as one off in front of the hometown fans Ryan Reid wins amongst the big dogs in new Infiniti series and cast growling give Hala. Welcome back to motor sports Monday Kurt Busch celebrates in Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway now a Daytona 500 champion and we need to mention. The fine folks at Outback Steakhouse our sponsor here on motor sports Monday. All are doing bloom and Monday today go by and asked for that bloom and onion they're doing it not because Kevin Harvick had a top in finishing with you did die right there just doing it to celebrate the start of the season won a bunch of nice folks shout out shout out. The Tony Raines Tony Raines his first race as a spotter with Kurt Busch. And I know for a fact that they spent extra time during the week and weekend going over tape talking about what curt wants. Kurt spotter Rick rally went to air Jones whose campus spot for him and Tony Raines who's associated with a team last year came in. To be Kurt spotter says not only did Kirk get his first restrictor plate race win and never finished the Daytona 500 had just a big win here but Tony Raines got plugged in a deposition was was recruited was free agent if you will and comes over in those two to get together Tony old man Gibson come on guys fame Jagan area bunch of old DIA card guys. That were associated wood Dale Junior for a number of years we're associated with that team capping off a fantastically. Just doesn't aside you mentioned sponsor or rather Ross spotters shuffling around how does that process work when a driver needs a new guy for whatever reason. You know a lot of to get that you know a lot of times what you do is you go to your current spotter say hey do you have any recommendations and he'll put a list together and then that driver will actually go and grab audio. To be able to listen and see what technique or what style he may like. And then it works from there if there's somebody else you know of Rick relic came to me and today you have an idea who could hurt who curb bush might like to. We put a list together but does the veterans on the roof kind of guide. Ideas not really picked make those choices but you definitely guide. Here's some guys who might present with with what you look accurate then okay cool well let's start right with the Daytona 500 dinner as a matter of fact. This was a race where it looked like. It was going to be a little calmer at least at first then we saw all in the Camping World truck series are big trinity series but by the end of it not so much. I was asked before the race if I thought the Daytona 500 was we run like the truck. Race on Friday. And the ex Fannie race on Saturday I said no I didn't see it happening. Because we didn't have a rules package change we didn't have a bunch of a rookie drivers who have Gil Barbara this is they seasoned veteran. Class of field with the same package it had no reason no rhyme or reason for this to be wreck fest. Boy was our well so then I saw a lot of the social media and I'm sure you did as well of people saying. Well this would never happen if it hadn't have been for the stages almost like the end of a Scooby Doo cartoons had nothing to do with the stage is because it was in between stages where we were off we were pitting when we had too anyway didn't they were fuel segment or fuel run was roughly 45 laps this segment stage lights for sixty so we were having to pit. And these cautions and accidents were happening. Even when we had to pit it had nothing to do with the stages so. We can though the conspiracy theories out without the stages on man we were wrecking regardless there are simple mistakes made by seasoned veterans and again. It's an anomaly we've seen it before it's not the first time we've seen major crashes with seasoned veterans at a restrictor plate race but it was an unusual. Now you mentioned the stages in the and the pit strategy there but we did see some. Who were a little bit earlier than maybe we had expected. Begins cars in particular and then Joseph really gone although I think his was related to and on track problem Ryder tire problem or something yeah he actually had IEA a loose not on hat that prevented the tire from being tight indirectly is what I my understanding is but it under his normal because accuracy he came down by himself at a restrictor plate race you've never won a pin on your own and he had to come down pit road and fix that problem and then was able to contend for the win there at the end OC picked up the field and was technically on the tail end of the lead lap and needed a caution at that point walnuts with a blue oval fairly came into play because it was Kevin Harvick in the guys like Brad Kozlowski who stayed lined up behind And we're a week of Joey was fast and stay in front of them. But there was never an effort to go by him and we saw that later on the race to instead house got off sequencing Kevin Harvick picked up until bumper richest and house before the stage length of the caution came out Ricky was able to make up that now is is that something where you you guys are raw Iran almost four guys got to stick together or is it more of if the circumstances work out been able to help each other. We can we've seen a very amber the strength in numbers really has been demonstrated well over the years but the Toyota camp using two different teams. With the furniture rose in the gives and so forth really align well. Chevrolet and Ford taken notice of that and Ford did a really good job during practice of going to Stewart Haas and team Penske whoever wanted to participate. And the Roush racing guys and get us a line of practice we saw all the alliance work. During the race as long as it related have to do with I'm still trying to beat you hand but it didn't and that certain situation it was really a matter of clicking off some laps so when. When Joey came out on his own they were able to pick him up keep him on the lead lap. When Ricky Stackhouse came out on his own say the same thing. Same scenario happened. You understand if that's a different manufacturer. You were there to cut your your job and the guy's exact already down if you can what you carry that global afford that we're so proud to cure is a teammate of the Stewart Haas racing and Roush racing and we were able to pick up those guys accused him on the lead lap again later on it played out. They sure did and one other thing dimension as well the points are out and now because of the stage racing. The numbers might not look like we would expect there would have seen in previous years you have points for the duels and there you have points for winning a stage of finishing top ten in the stage you can carry those points through the season now how to help and play off points for guys who won a stage so it's the points numbers may not look like you might expect from like we're used to you. This time last year not only was it 2016. But we were on a different points system rack his last he finishes 27 we normally would be right around 27 in points. Because of the two different stages in the associated points with them. We're twelfth in points so and that's why you're smiling well that's what I did we have ride after everything that's exactly right we try to have a good points Vegas we're not really trying to have a good points they were trying to win. The stages and competing and we saw last lap pass four top five positions on one of the stages to gain more points and so we take a 27 place finish we're twelfth in points you simply walk away happy because of that. All right let's move on now to the the NASCAR exclude these series and Ryan Reid how about that gets his second victory at Daytona and the one thing that jumped out to me about this Joseph you mentioned the young guys. And there were some who made some mistakes along the way. Ryan Reid is considered one of those younger guys but he does know how to win at Daytona he's done it before and to me it seemed like. That led him to make some proper moves that put him in the right spot at the end. Again another good shout out to Ryan Reid spotters Mike Herman longtime preacher and local short track one all we have to cover is great I don't read on several championships they really good racer on the roof is guiding Ryan Reid around that track humanize. Stood next week of for the races again the fort alliance we tried to maintain all all night long. And they everywhere with several couple laps to go to Ford's on the front row Ryan made that the proper moves pick the right lane which was unusual because he actually pick the outside lane. OK so back came from his spotter Mike Herman. Who chose the outside lane to break up the RC are teammates and that's why isn't the outside lane. The Dillon can do is behind rent out because he thought it was gonna necessarily be fast nope he just trying to split them up because he knew the teammates would work harder to try to pass them and when stick together and merely gang up on it unfortunately the three cars lined up on the point two runs out of gas the outside line rolls two laps later Ryan reads in Victory Lane and how about this all he did was. Beat some guys like Kasey Kahne Austin Dillon Brad Kozlowski needed to take that checkered flag his second at Daytona Casey looking for his first victory in expanding series a number of years after you're strong and excellent race all day long and that 88 from junior motorsports upfront. Those guys are really proud because it was one of the cars that came home and the biggest still running yet that we're talking a brand new chat is over junior motor sports for for the cars over there one I'm gonna go to the junkyard Dale Junior net and I thought for a long times beacon of junior motor sports. It appeared to me just eyeballing it. That Elliott Sadler may have had the strongest car in the trinity gracefully get at least until really very good very good contender for the top three series. Got involved and unfortunate bubble with the the front believe that the from the lead in the lead so normally staying out front is where you wanna be. Riding around back I used to do that and get involved in wrecks and now we wanna stay out front we saw several accidents is accidents happened from the front top two or three rows. So rather similar situation here in terms of the points standings Ryan Reid leads that Brendan gone. Based on some stronger runs in those stages now is second in the standing Elliott Sadler despite crashing. Because he won what two with a segments is now third overall in the standings Scott legasse junior Matt tift and decode our strong tied for the fourth spot. You know it's an interesting concept with the stages because again you walk away after having Iraq. Walking away at the end of the day which were all trying to win a championship that's who we did they sell and we all get rains and cool hats and trophies what were all looking forward to homestead when the playoffs are ending. And we can stand in Victory Lane as the champion of our series so at the end we walk with the Daytona and you finish a really bad finish. But your points day is okay. You do breathe a little sigh of relief off we want supposed to say I had a great point stay anymore I thought that was supposed to be gone well back now it's back but it's not because we attempted it that way. Because now used to run around third or fourth in the old day trying to just say OK I'm not comfortable spot here and now it's about going out there grabbing the trees grabbing that the low hanging fruit off the field off the apples in the peak on the trying to get as many you can't. And then if something happens in moderation you'll feel so bad because but if you still have positive stage links. Then the third time around we grab the checkered flag you have all the points but really big gain was like battle game we have all of your points right at it I don't know haggard. Are we got a big show coming up still here on motor sports Monday. The Camping World truck series winner cast growling gets his first victory he joins us on the other side of the break stick around. Hello this trend on the money in the last eight. I only thank you. Friday boom. Yeah it is our job. Oh. I'm staying both co host of Ambon we know. Joint air and over him in the upward to the new issue and on MR dotcom payload on the Obama. And join us was struck in the on Saturdays at 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM eastern on the LP big. We thought the Biggest Loser for cars and do you believe after the break results for the third truck around the country. MRI and waiters and an MR dotcom the MRI of. After more than one million hours of development the truck of the future as Iraq. The new cast stadium from freight liner inspired by science. Driven by passion. It's loaded with a driver focused improvements such as noise abatement technologies sporting even quieter ride yeah. It's innovative wrap around dashboard for improved comfort. And only imagine drivers laps that promotes productivity and relaxation experienced the new cast video and your dealer or online at freight liner to. Dot com one of slapped a coherent date and not let my breath completing that card berth on the Mac. Now faces a 73. Yeah they thought. Back after I now. Sports marketing checkers around final lap was on the planet had cats for a lot of. Do people these may be appointed dominant Victory Lane of CNN's voter. How about that too straight for GM must motor sports at Daytona this time it's cast crawler driving the key close olive oil should be Silverado. And cast gros joins us on the guest one outcast and opera announced that rider is key close not correct is that right. Added totally right chic clothes so did you guys don't olive oil all over each other in Victory Lane or what. Should I push. It definitely a little bit slippery Canada. Or congratulations man in this this was one of the wildest races I think we've seen in a long time but. You were one of the guys who was able to get through all the carnage out there and come home with a victory and it seemed like there was no safe place so we were just talking about both the Infiniti series and Camping World truck series. The league wasn't even a safe spot tell us what was going through your mind on those last couple laps they're trying to get yourself into the right spot. Well you know we had a green white checkered and prior to that caution now is right intact and we were all singles final Johnny leading. It appeared to me like we're potentially going to be right at home to exchange second place finish which Alice stoked about my personal speedway race. I really can't ask for a whole lot more than mask so I was. Open that would be indication but then Nick Green white checkered came around and the term clean had a lot of energy NRA. Basically got hung on the bottom fell back quite a few rows. And unfortunately gone and the back straightaway. I would think in. Are well unfortunately I think there goes my chance to move so work coming around on the front straight I closed back up get right up bumper tight and Timothy Peters. They waved the white flag and I'm figuring well. Anything goes on the last lap here we're gonna have to beat Brescia where gonna hacked to. Do what we can't make up any spot at all so I am Cushing Timothy. And you've seen it we can get this bottom line of rolling at the palace third in line on the bottoms don't think in. If we can get all the way down then maybe let me get a third place finish which I'd also be extremely excited about basically package it leaves there. With minimal damage I would have been happy camper no matter what how. And I knew I had a not truck where. If I was able to do that I figured I'd finish it fairly well. That and I started defeat at 27 truck and wrote spin out coming attitude. And I knew I would think it'll lift off the throttle I kept that can. Pulled the wheel bill lasting just kind of cross my fingers hoping that. Everything would work out and I wouldn't get hit from behind into. Sure enough I squeaked through by about an inch. And am looking out my windshield I didn't see anybody else in front of me like. Did that really take everybody else around me and then my spotter Eddie got hurt came on the radio and say you are the great winner. And I think I asked are you sure about six times before I actually believe there. Has one of the things you just mentioned what is your spotter Eddie behind you had the opportunity to work with them for the first time. At a restrictor plate race the week before the Argus series which are believed. You essentially ran the qualify yourself when NASCAR's standpoint to run the truck series. What goes in behind the scenes because communication is so important with you Eddie and the crew chief regarding a restrictor plate race. Well we had a lot of sit down meetings leading up. To the whole weekend in general even for the Arco race as well and what we really went over. Note. Jerry went over things that he's learned in the passion and Daytona Eddie went over things that he's learned. An and I kinda. Talked about what I had seen on video is ours were I had study. We also discussed. In detail exactly what to expect to hear on the radio from Eddie and how our communication was gonna work. All that kind of stuff is so that we were trying to go into this race putting ourselves that and smaller the disadvantage. As possible because. Of course there are a lot of guys in the trucks feel that there have run many laps and restrictor plate traction. Who have worked with their crew chief and spotters. For years already so. We are just trying to do everything that whereas in our control to try to create expect out. And see if we could go and act on in eating plain field as much as possible with everybody else. I can't by the start of the race. I felt like I pretty much had all the tools I needed other than the actual experience the actual feeling. Of these great season and unfortunately it stash feeling that might be the most important part because. Your instinct in your decision making comes from experience in knowing what to do and what not to do. Luckily for me in the first 99 laps of the race I was able to gain enough experience to know. At least what would be a good place to put my truck in on that very last lap but that's. Absolutely did and youngest driver to win the pole at Daytona international series' youngest winner at Daytona international series and the points leader and now you get right back in the saddle and head to Atlanta for that double header on Saturday the same day with the the extent of these series and then you guzzle have some down time. With this momentum where you're coming out of Daytona with how important is it to keep that going and keep that. Moving in the right direction you've got opportunity to get points now with the stages and involved in the in the scoring this year. Heading into Atlanta what kind of things are going through your mind. I think it's very important to keep the momentum rolling acting garment. If you're gonna have a successful season where you're contending for the championship in I have to be strong all year long. And I think each excitement of this race I'm not sure treats. Really ever gonna Wear off in my life but I can say is that arms starting this week it's Monday morning. It's all business now gone into Atlanta dislike any other race we Daytona is now under your view here with a lot of on definitely. The coolest experience of my life but. Now we got to focus on Atlanta and and see what we can do repaired it it's going to be a bank feels sure I think they'll look at the entry list needs are. Three different. Monster energy cup series drivers sell at it and it's not going to be any limits are short but we can come out there with another solid run. We being the really great shape. Heading into Martinsville for the third. You know you mentioned moving to Atlanta one of the unique things we only running speed we race twice in the truck series. And you have and then at one of the high banked mile and a half (%expletive) how are you preparing differently for Atlanta maybe you did for speed weeks at Daytona. Well I'm preparing an errant and very similar and actually I mean I'm I'm still studying video and and talking to aide Jerry and Eddie to figure out exactly what they know about and a place that is the good thing actually about it landing his. I got to cash there about a month that though. I used one of my rookie test one of mine at less than ten national series test there are so. At least I do have a few laps around that place and it is a more similar style of racing to short track racing. Then super speedway racing as it's a little bit more in that direction so. I'm I don't feel like I'm not quite as much it is advantage. Going into Atlanta and make it going into Daytona. But. There there's certainly going to be a lot of tough drivers in the field so. I'm just hoping to come around if we can finish the race analog laps I think will be able to come out with a top ten maybe even a cup. I have an arm that's all I can really ask work we have solid finishes like that we keep putting ourselves in the position like we did it eight owner. Eventually we're gonna get another win because Betty see how this sport works you keep Brennan up front those things will come to you. Absolutely they will war how's this sound points leader in the Camping World truck series you get to enjoy for just a few days before the pressure ramps up again cast congratulations on a strong run. First win at Daytona and first pole man that's got to be one of those situations where you pinch yourself for a few more days I guess. Maybe even a few more reach contract thank you very much fantastic man thanks for your time congratulations good how that the other so it's great to see. I got run out of the box like don't you think I just wanna Bob my time and do well and not mess anything up and instead he wins so. Old. Way back when I started spotting a long time ago. My round today have one foot stone wheels back my first win there was the Daytona 500 Michael Alter how about that I remember because it's such a huge rates as grow and now has that ring as that verbiage of champion. Daytona champion in the Camping World truck series that he will carry within for the rest of his life it's a tad too whether it's on his Skinner not that he earned annual carry with them forever. Absolutely he will don't forget by the way. Kurt Busch the Daytona 500 champion is gonna join us. On NASCAR alive Tuesday night at 7 eastern but you can call a little bit early. 10 o'clock on Tuesday if you're watching on Monday call 1802 NASCAR that's 2627227. And chat with Kurt Busch tomorrow and that'll be aired on NASCAR alive Tuesday night we've got a lot more here on motor sports Monday stick around. This economic. Army in the last eight. You've been a three time runner up in the Daytona 500 now you are eight Daytona 500 winner first. Your initial reactions and emotions. And there's nothing predictable about this race anymore and a more Greg years that have gone by and I didn't win. I kept trying to go back to patterns that I had seen in the past and my near fell off with thirty laps ago and I couldn't even see out the back and I think you know that's a moment. Just throw caution until it wins the more unpredictability that keeps unfolding at the Daytona 500. Well I predicted it and it just got crazy and wild and I'm so proud of all the drivers at the end we put on a show for a full fuel run nobody took each other out. And those he was the smartest just games I've seen out there and we got lucky but let's say all that hard work that forward as they chart everybody put in this this Ford Fusion is in Daytona this Victory Lane. How about that he doesn't have aside Mir he's flip and all the switches try to make sure he's got enough fuel to get to the end this guy's a in front of him are running out and running out and somehow some way it works out and Tony Raines and as your guide him through around the traffic and he was able Kurt Busch is able to predict the unpredictable but I was really has that even possible. We got just a little bit of time left in the show quickly let's look ahead for Atlanta we've got another triple header it's a double header on Saturday. The X thirty series and Camping World truck series and in the cup series monster energy cup series on Sunday one of the greatest figures we can get we got three races in two days but the littlest alliger this will be the last race before they were go back to repay of Atlanta and so many drivers are saying don't ever change this track and now they're doing now they're doing it we're gonna be racing top to bottom card and we slip and slide retirement is very important. And live even lower downforce on loan exact data writer and so make more important about tire management we do have the new stages we have to deal with the last time on the old pavement though again it's gonna be a lot of fun and we should seat. Some real action there as well with that even lower downforce packages. As we mentioned don't forget folks once again Kurt Busch the Daytona 500 champion is going to be a guest on NASCAR logic here that. 7 o'clock eastern time on Tuesday night but Tuesday morning at 10 eastern you can call with your questions to talk to Curtis well at 1802 NASCAR.
