Yeah they Hill Man Morning Show on demand. Knowledge and pin on your schedule at WAS. Dot com. I love having our next guest in the studio because I feel like some day you'll give me some sort of social cred when I am out. In public but he is good karma and good and good karma or social cred. The maestro is here to keep it locked cards. Nice to have you back did you bring there's an amateur I did not bring my banana a pet him in the same banana for the last I don't know. And that is attache but it I mean I feel like you really missed the boat on a series of conducting live fruit to YouTube and YouTube videos or something like ten gonna provide the fruit. Well. It's great to have you here and I know there's a bunch of stuff you wanted to talk about but I wanted to ask you first about. You're hearing. Hello I'm over I'm Todd can you tell us armed and this news today. That Huey Lewis. The legendary pop star. Is basically indicating that because it's his hearing is so far non. He's not going to be able to sing anymore and I'll I'll actually will all play some audio from. From Huey here as I walked to the stage. It sounded like there was a jet engine going on I knew something was wrong and couldn't find pitch but distorted. Nightmare. The list goes. But at least literally you know its its capacity even though. I can hear you we can talk. I can talk on the phone but I can't sing I can't hear music. And so I need to do everything but what I love to do mostly. You have this you know drag. So for Huey Lewis he's not going to be is that something that you run the risk because of it for doing this for so many years everybody in musical performance. Lives in fear. Of losing here because that's really the one sense that we we can't do without. And it it is an issue it's it's more of an issue in the field of pop and rock just because of the volume levels of which exist on those stages. But honestly everybody onstage with the Boston Pops in the Boston symphony thinks about this too. I was I've steadfastly wanted to Norton's I don't know what had happened because I've been basically on stage in half the knights of the year. With your home monitor speakers screaming next to me with or without a with a high note violent in my ear that playing missile. Or 35 years. And but I actually had a hearing baseline last year really and I was like waiting for the immigrants it's like waiting for doctor what is it and they came back and they said. They're fine. If there's a little roll off on my left here which I had actually. Detective when they did the tests as the third left here doesn't sound quite as brilliant at the upper middle overtones and they said. They said ball only you only somebody trained to do what you do would have noticed that yes there is a difference between those two yeah yeah but. I I have other I have friends who have lost their careers because of no longer be the reason you can't hear. You can't play into and you can't sing into emperor conductor my whole job. Yeah jobs listening to everything that's coming out of there. When when we have a very loud like William Steven Tyler on the front of the stage with the orchestra. On of the hole all the whole rest or dribble use earplugs. But I want user plugs because it's kind of like having the captain of the ship wearing like Jack. Yeah. Now how do you has few ever played with the playoffs no and that was that was our was released at the news too because. You -- Louis and would agree. Collaboration with the like the work that way and we have talked about it. Have you noticed. Yeah I guess it wants out. How do you you guys haven't announced the four collaboration all right we have but he's still working on that are so we are still working on is actually. Fairly close to two being together and it's going to be a great line I think I can tees around this thing's going to be entirely. Female. While this year with the it was good yeah Goodyear for exactly. And really interesting performers real diverse set of reforms across a whole lot of ways musical expression. Who is the former. From you know from Popper from rock who has surprised you most. When they have positively or negative yeah. It's that deposit winning. As the one news. Okay acted. David Lee Roth really. Because it's. That was kind of film Mary last minute things is back and the CBS broadcasting on on CBS national. And we had somebody fall through we have a problem with this happens a lot. Well obvious errors on big national tours a lot of times restrictions from nation of them get the donut that's exactly meted out there and that's that's a freebie even offer a certain kind of person that's huge visibility and note to a different audience in some cases. Anyway at the last moment oh we ended up with David Lee Roth because. Yet a relative who work for CBS special program and Connolly. Well you know outside of two and jump hook yeah yeah. I have to say. He was such a positive ball vanity. Just really fun. I mean this he swept everybody Earl like. This this is not the most sophisticated. Effort on. He was was he carried he carried the day because he had to incredibly good time. On the stage he really wanted to be. Ha then I am with them though that the best thing you know is over after party at the that Emma Copley plaza. Somebody else was having some wedding there on the fourth like a figure but at any rate we walked into a lot months ago walking with him and they are playing. Jump. The wedding the wedding band is playing W joins is that I was. This look like at ten year old and this was a category there and got he runs into the room and the brightest. Yeah I added that events happen. Keith Lockhart is our guests are you know well you have to tell us oh who. Surprised you in a less than positive black boy can't tell you can't do that can ticket that would be. Here's a 508 tacks who says have you ever tried to get Justin Timberlake. To join you I their fourth of July asked one honor or otherwise we have to rise eight that is tough that's a hump yet do yeah those. Those are the kind of people that global it's kind of like they'll call you. You know but yeah yeah value if they wanna do a durable you know and Justin if you're listening and I had time to look how how. Archived project is it Q lying. Entertainers to to be part of your legendary wesun venom we spend more time doing that pretty much anything else so many ideas are floated. We have we have budgetary constraints that the for profit world doesn't necessarily right right and is so you know it entity at the end of the day and that really having to be somebody who really wants to do. Mean that's that's what it is. And you know and when they do wanna do it when they're fully invested them when they're an artist who actually. You know there artist who does to a demand and tells them out and those people just get the biggest music mostly yet because of course that's a ticket guys yeah that's a pet him and let them. But there are other ones who don't define their own course and say. I don't care what the year make a lot of your 15% on this. I wanna do I wanna do those people we like that yeah. You guys are. I was gonna say conducting a conducted a contest can say that she hasn't just kind of confusing the two n.'s. I was kind of hoping. That this had been inspired. By your experience last time in the studio where you taught me how to conduct using a banana said I know but no it's not it's not it's not me. No it's inspired by the great Leonard Bernstein and this year words were we and the whole rest of the musical world are paying tribute this hundredth anniversary of his birth. Most of famous americanization. Of the funniest the second half of the twentieth century probably one of the most famous in the world. About Bruce brings well we're we're talking about class. Okay that's I showed my snob appeal and I really. I'll look back. Did the Bruce Springsteen right westside story. Yeah. Oh by the way if you get a chance to see Bruce on Broadway and a few gruesome I yes I am and I hear that shows were dissidents it's the most amazing thing that and I Fredricka and that's a great. And speaking of people we really want to have. In the office in when this kid wizard. DC we've we've media directly as you have gotten it comes here to get an enormous amount I'm an Indian and indeed imminent need six. Front row on that maybe that would that would I was okay. The requested I'll thank you yeah a lottery I think that. But. So anyway members I was born Lawrence lived in Roxbury Newton Brookline growing up what to Boston Latin went to Harvard. Is very first ball. Professional orchestra concert here. As of fourteen year old kid was with Boston Pops 1933. Really the very first time while the professional extra was the Boston Pops. He won. Contest he won a car. All that really you know what is based on yeah wasn't sponsored by like The Herald American newspaper just yeah a lot of one of the second and newspapers in Boston at that time that and it was a music a classical music trivia contest. Which are you know he he probably should have been banned from taking it it was rather Smart and and a graduate of Harvard in the Curtis Institute of Music. Anyway he won that and he conducted on a Boston Pops concerts so that was the idea. When we said let's have our own conducting contest we're not doing it to be contest this time we're actually going to. Tried to evaluate people based on their conducting but try to give some young conductor that kind of instant visibility that parents get that's awesome how to how does. How how does he or she get involved in the how is he or she gets involved that I assumed by going to Boston Pops dot org you got our website and looking for the the contest details assay and what you look for it like if you're. Like hiring your replacement or like what are what are the kinds of things that you really look for when somebody is conducting I assume. You know we outlook can go all right it's the fluidity of the the movement with the you know it was acting called by the way but he on the baton is you don't look at when the banana. Except when Aaron but. It's it is it's hard to evaluate conducting talent just like. It's it's easier to evaluate an actor from doing a monologue. Leonard director from you know a director from a similar ten minutes yeah you know because basically the end of the day. People can look all sorts of ways and still pull affect results of an orchestra. When your a auditioning a violinist you give them two or three things to play the kind of show you only need to know about their technique or lack of technique they're rhythm or lack of rhythm and all that with a conductor. You try to see. Instant communication you try to see that they understand that what they are doing. Is not just waving her arms around in the air but. Being cost of tort causing music happen. And you try to see both aid that they understand the of the relationship between gesture in response. And that they also hear what kind of response they're getting because they're all sorts of people who grow conducting a stereo you probably down front that. And they think they're conducting really really well the problem is of course the service. Hear it from the affected by Leonard to stipulation that. I'm here is that Texas says ice the pops at Tanglewood. Is Josh Groban. Life changing experience. That's amazing in that engineers sent him by any kind of you know who in. Alter its. Texts or wants you do attribute to remain ranked court. The anthem singer from from the Bruins. I'm that's a tough time to do though they say Iraq it is that they could easily do we we have like the hardest and worst National Anthem to sing this and the and then since we were talking about bruised and we're talking about Huey I'm just curious about. I'm what would you Keith Lockhart say is your favorite either Popper Iraq was your favorite album. Of all time. That's either pop or rock either on Iraq yeah throw class a and I got. They iconic blue. Led Zeppelin four. Real carrier RI and that's the military about its but when they hit it yeah. Probably 7197. Anyone out probably this. 1213 years old and out about it. And plus I mean but if you listen to what's on that problem and the quality of the musicianship and equal things we're doing. You know a we're doing Iraq pops. There next week yeah and you know Perl you'd you know serious. Oh. Don't don't go all like or mr. playing that's. We're we're we're collaborating with Alfie both lose huge British singing sensation. Was the person that Pete Townshend brought with him to sing what graphene in what we did quad female. Pete or or Roger they can't sing stuff by being held as a he'd get a couple of comic cameos but I'll be saying the whole album top to bottom. Amazing. Incredible. So we said hey let's do it let's do kind of an all over great rock 67 these sort of things overdoing it. We're doing a show with him next Tuesday and Wednesday. Where we're doing queen. Zeppelin. The stones. The Who. Wow moody blues' nights in white satin. Also that so I felt at all of us of kind of certain. Certain age this is just sweet spot for great rock. Do you want me to do the knights in white satin the monologue part yeah we a delicate and go read the the gathering gloom. Watch lights fade from every room a little bit more elaborate yeah. I don't know if it isn't is its deal for that or is there. Kind of a fee is involved in tickets are very different. Yeah they do. All right well. Make sure that you go and check out on the pop cite this opportunity. It's a really really cool conducting competition inspired by. Mr. Bernstein and it's it actually is for people who actually know how to conduct rush yeah that would have gotten him and it's got tumbling as an anti deliberate. Look at it for 25 year old kid just at a conservatory or does not have an outbreak that sort of thing you know even if you don't you know. Just come to a concert and you can sit in the audience and a long as much as you want right you can do that there's though for this Bernstein all through the Iraq the pop's next Tuesday and Wednesday yet Disney. This weekend Mother's Day weekend awesome. Disney on Broadway for kids I'll bet he got into the audience on June 12 while Leslie Odom juniors there all of them down here. Three Andy grammar tomorrow night. Are we re doing any films this year we are not doing any films like this year be treated so many films lashing I went to three hours. Ali thank you John as we left to. Following readers everyday yep yep and it's just seem to watch. Basically if you're not familiar they they play these legendary films and I'll take the score out of the movie. Andy York district doesn't live it it it like puts you in the middle of the film it's just an incredible experience this is we will go back to doing those this year we're doing Broadway because of Bernstein love it we're doing West Side Story in concert all the music from us that story and we're doing on the town. With a cast of huge we're about to announce the cast but it's star studded. This is Connor on the Framingham Ford's studio lot with people. Marty Connor. They're good morning show that lets or not. Yeah I keep that trend I'm actually sorry guys do. The morning and show mergers bird those phenomenal. All humans are the only are you do I really Colin hay over America. That would be phenomenal. It's a good idea but that. People that don't write it down yeah. And now I'm Warren Haynes got there was it was actually agree heated heated both out of ten wouldn't here in Boston he did a Jerry Garcia symbolic show is viewed as just evidence it was a business that you oh yeah that's associated task order and said I'm constantly hall now's a great tangle with the was a cloud yeah how how. I don't know what enabled on a bug that. That's a lot of isn't it expensive I expected that remind you all to remind you of being twelve years old listening to Led Zeppelin Miami. Might in the Mormeck colleges. I know but I just up on the podium and breathe. Gathering gloom I'm I all right well listen it's great to have you as always come in anytime you want. Do you prefer that we call you maestro please don't go OK okay. An old cat time we're not gonna call you maestro but Keith Lockhart it's great to see who degrade I Christmas.
