Swapping out his MR and microphone for the students lion. Well get in the old NASCAR hall of fame buttoned up and ready to roll how to just ask him about how preparations were coming along for. Their biggest week of the year. We're in the process of unloading in. The new exhibits right now the five cars that are gonna go win with this year's inductees and all the artifacts and exhibits enough. Getting ready for the ceremony in the Dennis coming up this Friday so we're excited about are things going well. Scene where a lot of this has been made to Glory Road look at some of the fans expect when they go see the new and improved Glory Road coming up this week. Now we college gore wrote I con spur reason we wanted to get act on either drivers memories. Moments in racing cars that people are gonna remember. Ones that they hadn't seen before like Darrell Waltrip birth the 1964 Daytona 500. Winning car from Richard Eddie. Sam march double zero car we've bugged out my scanners truck from. The very first championship season so a lot of area tonic cars that people may not have seen in a very long time. You know we talk about the five men being inducted in the NASCAR all think I imagine you've got a kick out of watching their families responsibly on that they're about to get. That's the most funded this induction ceremony today is my favorite day of the year without question. And when a fight about that why is that it's because of watching the families that the competitors the drivers or whoever it is. They're top box shops it's what they he would. You know and and it's while it's a big deal to him I don't act like it's a big deal but watching the families whether. The inductees living or not you think about Fred Lorenzen Stanley they never saw embrace they didn't realize. What a big deal he applause you know they had seen. Yeah they had seen near the history of the state and realized what a big deal it it was so I'll look forward every year to see the family's reaction. Now once we get on Friday night with the induction is on Saturday critical day NASCAR fan appreciation day. Yeah we're gonna have about a 3035. Of the NASCAR's top stars you know including chase Elliot Martin Truex junior Kasey Kahne among those who will be there signing autographs doing Q&A sessions. We'll have a lot of other folks here from the industry of course in Marin and will be there yourself by Alex and several other so. And it's for it you know something the NASCAR puts on every year and we work with the moment. To appreciate what the fans do for our sport. I'm not gonna put on the spot right here but when the new NASCAR fan comes in that's never been there before like it will happen this weekend. What is something maybe what's one thing or two things that they need to check out that could may be really appealed to them and really catch their attention. Well you know this might sound like a cop out answer but one of the things we've learned is people look for different things. Sucked tucked sometimes hesitate to say what allies. Yeah I think from my hands on perspective the two things that are most popular. Or are pit crew challenge where you can actually compete against other an array simulator those two of the most popular from the exhibit standpoint. Depends on whether their historical or not you know I'm in most people. Like to see something that's relevant civilian they're from a particular area so they wanna see a driver. That's from that area or they wanna see a particular era. That you know I would have my first rice was in 1964 Daytona 500 so that car is special to me. So you might have some money that started following NASCAR. In a timeframe that was around Jeff Gordon so they wanna see that you know. Our moonshine still is always one of my favorite because it helps explain Madden it's a full size still the juniors still tells me Junior Johnson. It is operational. So there's so much deceive but those are some of my favorite. That's was to Kelly executive director of the NASCAR hall of fame in uptown Charlotte. When we return we'll highlight Benny Parsons and later we go face to face with Richard Childress. The Daytona 500. Cindy Parsons spinach kale Yarborough doubt Obama only speculate how we'll live with Parsons and brought kale Roddick second maker puts a little while to go around you cannot do that part to win the Gabriel 400. He was well liked given the nickname the professor. Daddy always put a smile on everyone's face and the reason why is because see here they. It was important to him that the people like ten doesn't like genuinely liked everybody in return I think he would be he would be very pleased to have thankful. And knowing that at this that this honor was bestowed upon. His little brother Phil Parsons. Described Benny as an every man race. I just think that he was sees you he's Workman like you know wasn't flashy. You know didn't necessarily. You know go on you lead a tunnel laps. Brought Brothers Betty Parsons up front right. I'm Denny joins the NASCAR circuit full time in 1970. Got his first win of the South Boston speedway in 1971. Then just two years later Parsons won the 1973. NASCAR Winston cup championship with only one that wins. This flag is displayed at the winner with a group up exploiting number one. Along the betting market. In 1975. Parsons won the biggest race of his life the Daytona 500. No one has ever gone a bit far back toward the Daytona 500 letting the government here is you're camping and how they've gone up batting park bit. Part of the video eagle at audible failed one but Daytona 500 why do you why do you say banning dog victory like that. But I want everybody Broadcom a love for World Cup. Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace was enshrined into the hall in 2013. And it came as a surprise to him and BP wasn't inducted before him. I really honesty and they got a feeling they'll win that that quick I did I mean obviously could not Benny Parsons. I'm Betty is on my monologue he is a topic driver that I thought it's so much in our sport that. He would depth Cleveland before Wright did. Parsons accomplish so much and a short time on this earth. The age of 65 and 2007. But it left this world due to complications with lung cancer. A tremendous broadcaster. An incredible race car driver and even better friend. BP was a boy whose influence and impact on this board will not ever be forgotten. As he's forever enshrined in NASCAR's hall of fame. So many people at the Daytona. Ask me what does it feel like the Winnebago all right and I decide I try to rise up and down the poem goes after. I sit by the general flow and mounds stream. This is NASCAR live on the motor racing network the voice of NASCAR. NASCAR line now back to Mike back. Welcome back to this NASCAR hall of fame this year the NASCAR live our next inductees to highlight. Is Richard Childress woody came had a chance to sit down with a RC and a NASCAR live face to face interview. So your point into the hall of fame and I know you're excited about it I've heard you talk about that before. But when you started this whole crazy thing all those years ago did you ever imagine that he has all exist in the power in the middle of downtown Charlotte the hall of famers here. The sport has gone from whom did you ever imagine we beat at this point. Not really you think back at 96 and then in Talladega and it worked out that it's one of the rights. And to be here today started that note when the dollar tax impairment exit and field condemn him surely like he has enough. Pretty amazing this forward in this red from. He's been a lot of peaks and valleys threatens to. Great stories where you talked about break you go to Talladega that you mentioned but I've never heard you tell the story tell folks who are familiar with it. How that happened because you really want your big break right. Yeah it was when the bigs right she's no remnant you get her heart among those things right right I just I've been fortunate to. To be able to take. Advantage of it and in 69 and they get this Wednesday boycotted the speech. Bill France senior rebrand the grand American rice today were they gave us money to come in. That we ran the race and Sunday. And that gave us some extra money come in close personal problem if we're after in a win back balls land that first shop so. It was a big break and I got really no difference. In that time I think folks have today have a hard time understanding count was guys drove their own car so the track him. Did everything almost by the seat of their pants and Alex you know become corporation shoe shops all around. When when you look back at those times. What lessons do you take from those that help you get to where you are now. Yeah I think. Learning how to race and budget. Which we do you deem him very very little movement of racism and made things happen and and not have a lot of wasting your business and have people who ran it that simple keys spread yourself people that had some same ambitions and goals was to do in life. In your job. Talk a little bit about your career behind the wheel. I'm sure that help you translate your drivers and in terms of in your business started getting your teens started going that direction you wanted to go but behind the wheel yourself when when was your your hide your best moment when you did you feel the most culpable racing and we. I felt kind of live and time again. Hand real and I never started her face about it thankful today all the big boards are gonna have a problem is going to be much chance to win. And I didn't have to win all that we had some really good runs in 1974 were finished fourth in the points. Had some really good run today and I seen. The money start coming in back when the hospitals in the years and a high Justin's all of this money started coming in that kept going back. Run the top ten top fifteen. What had this much and is ahead our team to came along and 81. But they'll in the car in the recesses. Speaking at they'll tell me about the first time you met him what you think. You know I met him a couple of times ran track this vote but in we ran a race ever met from last. And kill and I I was racing for the win at several polls and had a really good car that day. It was an invitation. Was all the cup cars back here and what we called grand national. Kill my win in the last corner. Now aren't coming back into the night and it went in Christ they'll finish second and came over a minute chance that or an hour. Moved in since some ratio we will leave. Do you beat. Oh yeah he's one everything's that's. The relationship that you just started I mean it was. It was in fits and starts at first and then once she really got one together and solidified it was like a rocket taken off. Tell me about the early part of that relationship and and and getting the ball rolling. Cloudy though and they'll. For years before he started Bryson. Went back in the early seventies like I said after a one race weekend talking to each other again and hunt club in South Carolina. And 81. When he came in reminiscing and licensees and one draft for. You can improve his crisis and we even got closer than we might attack someday we'll get back yet. Opportunity came along and nineteen night Tina. Eighty hold. And got back yet but Ricky rip hip sip. The tone for our company who won races once told him that really jump started his career and our career. And so we got back together in eighty forward. This episode the streak like Alex. Do you remember the first time you've kind of got hooked on racing are really interested in racing what what profit that. Yeah I was just if he had. Probably 89 years so Luna. One of only grey stone stadium and west and selling peanuts and popcorn. And when they had the right side sit there and watch it my heroes and Billy and Bobby Myers and Curtis Turner and would always got a race in the media. Oh modify adds back in the day and I said man I ever get the opportunity writes whenever it came. They started man and a dollar claiming division. Apple you know when the dollar for its employment taxi in that they point about sport best investment ever made in. Started racing that I had a dream of of being able to get the Daytona race something good race with a Dick Wilson's. I've dreamed Inco were worse than this if they can dig in your record that. The same kind of competitiveness as an owner that you felt when you're a driver or is it is it. Kind of different yeah I mean I've always been competitive and everything I've ever done. And I just try to make sure that I give a hundred seen anything out there. And if I do they have none of them it may not always kind of be a win or whatever but as always you know. It's you gave Richard bills that so you can. Me a little book about today how gratifying is it. From all the stories that you told about helping started to now be where you are and see your grandchildren moving up through the ranks and and an Austin bill would you couple years already now it own your own your own team. Yeah I mean it's it's both of whom started out racing when they were thirteen and fifteen I guess you've probably got a late start it in today's world. But yet it puts a lot of Brad. In the whole family secede in western race. And that debuted also won a couple of championships. Taiwan is championship the north and for one than ever and laces that year's open and you know they they both have head did their job in the courtroom more proud of these great young again and understand this we'll have you respect. For our fans and for the sport that that they did it. That's Richard Childress in this week's NASCAR live face to face interview coming up next. Will feature one of the pioneers of NASCAR with Raymond parks and later Rick Hendrick joins us. Victory junction was generation driver Adam Kennedy's dream he worked toward building a camp for children with ceilings now. Conditions to concentrate on and now they're mr. Aziz. Class to the sport was a businessman. That looked auto racing and he put a lot of resources into the sport through. Rick welcome back to the show how Loria. Doing fantastic not as good as you though because you're about to engage it's at the pretty cool Friday night at the NASCAR hall of fame. When you found out that you are going to be inducted what was your immediate reaction when you got the nod from your peers in this sport that. They're gonna put you into such an elite place. It was extremely humbling I mean now. Hard to believe you know use. You know you'd think about it yet nominated some years a lot of years and but this huge you know there's so many worthy people. That should be an alternate. And you lopped. And when it happens cities thank my hand. This is so special. Unbelievable. That you dreamed about it and it. In this sport and didn't think he'd ever ran our race or. Let alone a championship and ER. Get ready going call science. The common experience committee. Well it's amazing you've got 245. Wins in the cup series 23 in the expend these series 26. In the camping wrote truck series and twelve titles to your credit. What is one of the moments are a couple of the moments that are the most proudest of since you BA came in the sport back in the mid eighties. Well I. You know get there there's a lot. But with an eight per trades you'll always remember. Mark Russell could that happen a lot. We had. When that right wouldn't be here. Very important that. That the jet both analytical and then write it in response to conclude on closes doors. I candidate heading in hill and that was. Unbelievable video. Winning his first championship. I'm sitting in New York back in about mainly you're gonna have sayers. And you just want. I'd let you know NASCAR championship. Have been motion that. That we into side. And then at stake when Rick he wandered off road truck race in Kansas. In my life. The singer sign. When that race is a motion our emotions. Something that he thought about. From the fact you could talk. And then so I'll voters are the most memorable debate. When you look back on the titles you say the first one came in 1995. Was that. Easy for you that year I mean what what what was the most difficult challenge on that and and when did you know. That you're about to become a NASCAR what was then Winston cup series championship winning car owner. Where you're. You know and if you do it and when you're locked in India he start thinking about you start thinking about what you have to do and you know eat it it's a total of Marky you're back in those days it they it's if you had a bit portly. And you went into that last Friday in Atlanta. You need okay it would finish 38 we got. Would finish you know whatever we can do it you know way you are. I remember I can't remember what king occasion it was but we decided that. It clean and windshield. Right which pack the car. Somebody else slipped. I support our sleep it and it. Ellen yeah mom. Two. And we had a 382 pit stop. We have a little breather and I hear that. It so up. The bottle and there are not mean I can remember. Years at least we finished. Remove don't finish first and second and third. Purpose secondly. Leo there's pressure. Between the teams for their work together. And then. You know. Course group in all of homosexual. All of the nerve wracking. All problem. You never get it out to blend in so it happens when not a problem. Caught it early last year when it. You. Just you laugh together and literally Lafayette and he had to win. Or be edited out of that. Two win championships. They're all natural. It's. Hard to win. I thought that I used to go to new York and watched Richard Childress they learn or get that championship every year are harder than now. You know get that first one was. An unbelievable feeling and very black political us. Been able to enjoy this sport. And make so many good people and brands that. And in watching you all over the years. Chatting with Rick Hendrick here on NASCAR live about to be inducted into the NASCAR hall of fame. Rick you've had this uncanny ability to to develop. Not only guys that work in the shop folks that work in the office but race car drivers as well you've been very successful about harvesting talent when you. Your drivers to drive for you. What are a couple of things that you really looked for in a driver. Or. You saw all and say well it may be that way now but with some nurturing it could be a certain way in the future and that'll be beneficial. The operation what are some of those criteria that you use when you are picking up drivers. Well you know when you have multi car teams. Through you or get someone a little bit. That'll contribute and you know that they got to get along will let you don't have a ball. Also in our sport she got at you know that that person that can handle himself. And then deal was all but the most important ingredient and now he's in tropical later rest of that but now. When you see it liked. You know Jeff Gordon when he's out there and drowning them you know but Busch Series are over the years you know it is usually hit like a Eliot. We see someone like Jimmie Johnson. And you say what it got down all the tools he's such clean cut line is. Good friends with yet so different about our. And I get excited about that you know. I get excited about growing like Steve what are not. You know. Allen got a lesson that look at the shop and then outline about leader's. Order you know egregious. It can be it. You build it the Ukraine app like rainy Norton and Barry bill regret foundation. That you bring people along and they grow and mature into houses. It was the along ball. That brought to the GDP art experience so us. And go on it and I hit supermarket senate it super excited about a way to embarrass her. You know the chase Elliott and the young dad. And I believe could have got quite terrifying in yet but now. It and I tomorrow. Mr. rage we appreciate what you've done for the sport we appreciate that the time you make for us here motor racing network we all stand here and a Moran a salute you and I congratulate you on this on this Altima achievement. Mark Martin will join us next this is NASCAR live on the motor racing network the voice of NASCAR. This is NASCAR line. When it comes to NASCAR drivers it would be hard to find one more tenacious and determined than Mark Martin. As a teenager Morgan started his career racing on the dirt tracks of his home state of Arkansas. In 1977. He moved to the ASA division. Where he won rookie of the year and followed it up with three straight championships in 19781979. And 1980. In 1981. Mark Martin made the move to NASCAR's top division as a driver and co owner with bud reader. That year mark made five starts earning two poles one top five and two top tens to this day he claims that that first year was his greatest accomplishment. You know I think I got could never that was living in racing in the end did not invent many feel that cup car you know and and make it special and make it fast enough. They sit on the pole and third Racine theatre. So that's an interesting story itself and really proud. In 1982. Martin competed full time. But failed to have the consistency they were expecting. After leading just four laps and having twelve DN AFs on the season. Martin was forced to sell off the team that was a hard pill to swallow for someone that had succeeded in just about everything in his short career. I did not know failure and I wasn't afraid of I thought back control. But this and went up bomb that failed so miserably in eighty to it and that was done. Douglas in Arizona welcome to NASCAR live year old Mark Martin. Hey mark. I away that they can take the year rate being careers the biggest mistake. The big hit any of my racing career woods. I did not. Immersed myself but not in NASCAR racing. Before I make my first it can't add it. I had never been in the garage. Of a NASCAR race when I showed up for my first. NASCAR race were rappers are enact qualified it and it looked like it was going to be pretty easy in the third star. Are well I don't know toe. And the port are finished third. And in the fifth start at ten on the pole again. And finish seventh and it looked like it was going to be easy so I waited in full time the cup racing. In it was a lot more difficult to run a full schedule. That it was ginger shrimp operation. When you were ready and prepared and IDs did not have the backing. To be able to sustain. Back kind of performance so it round up rented me broke our financially. And bankrupt. Sort of brought. Mentally and an emotionally. And I had to start our career all over Ian had to go back. What continent struck her career all over into that was the biggest mistake was not known what I was trying to get into. Douglas thanks for the call couple more things for free go mark you have 49 winds of what was then the NASCAR Busch Series and and you helped define an era in nets' series. What's your fondest memory of your days in the NASCAR Busch Series. You know it it the eight the early years it the 1987. Which was going year ran a full schedule. And racing with Tommy Ellis and Tommy Houston and Jack Ingram. Every week and and and guys like bad running over and just you know and in Larry Pearson. And being a part of that family at that. That was an amazing series. At the and we get a lottery is that we're not conjunction with. And you know I think a lot about that as a real special armed but he. And you know we were fortunate to win win a lot of racism. I'm really fortunate. Other question for me. You are one of the first drivers I ever Saul. That would pull over let someone pass in the car was closing in on you Hewitt pulled to the inside let that car pass. And then you would you engage in the fight at a later time in the race. And for a lot of race car drivers now we don't see a lot of that why did you first start doing that. And when did you first start doing. Well I you gave rate. I started and had an ASA. I raced against really hard charger my giddy. And he would bear leapt. You know we usually are qualifying and he barely passed the in Rafa. And hide and eventually come creeping back you know it when it came time to cry. Outrage of pride and I didn't wanna fight about it when it didn't matter. And I always need a race at 300 mile race or 300 lap race under whatever it was. What is whoever was able to get to the finish line in the shortest period Arab overall. Woods. You know. What the winner so it didn't matter what you needed the first part of the race the middle part of the race what mattered is. Here Carolyn went to knock out pandered to turn all of it and after the last panel pit stop you in. Positioned and ready to Muster your bearish strongest. Solved. You know when it really counted. It and that was the date we have EU had to. Nurture equipment and that is basically had to nurture tires. In the and I just nursed everything. So that we and it came time to drop the hammer. And everything. At night you know at my. Fingertips. Napping was diminished everything was as strong advocate be that break the tires the the body were petroleum that is being here everything was. Impact in rating ghetto. What raced. You know I want a patriot achieved in the eight inning on an eighty and I was. 1920 and 21. Show I learn port predicting early in those championship propelled me in the match. Car they were very important. At that time so you know I figured out you know early on. It it was about. Drop in the hammer at the end and if you great side by side used terms to the leader or whoever be it. So it was much quicker to just let them when you buy back and it really accurate read it and when your 32. And you know rake it change a lot he would do that anymore. Record I'm certainly well.
