Rock for a Reason: A Concert For Kiva

Event Description:

As a teenager and music fan, Kiva didn't realize how much her life was about to change nearly 30 years ago, when she found her way backstage to meet In The Pink - one of Boston's biggest hard rock bands. In the months and years after that meeting, she became more than just an average fan; she became their number one supporter - calling to promote their music to local radio stations and even heading up their official fan club and newsletter. More than that, however, she became a close friend and honorary "little sister" of the band.

By the early 90s, In The Pink was flying high, hitting number one in multiple markets with their song "Under Summer Skies" - quite a feat for an unsigned band. They worked with artists ranging from Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme to Michael Bolton. Although the band called it quits in 1993 amidst the newly-emerging grunge movement and has since moved on to different projects and parts of the country, they've maintained their musical ties and tight friendship. They also remained close friends with Kiva, including supporting her as she fought a battle with cancer in 2014.

When the cancer reared its head again earlier this year, In The Pink sprang into action to help their friend by doing what they do best: making music. On August 17, In The Pink will reunite with two more of Boston's biggest hard rock bands of their era - Flesh and Sweet Cheater - for Rock for a Reason: A Concert for Kiva. Proceeds from this benefit concert will go to help Kiva and her family during her battle against cancer.

Kiva was stunned when she found out about the plans for the show. When the band asked if she was "in," she replied, "Are you kidding me?! Of course I'm in!"

The members of In The Pink are excited about the reunion and can't wait to come together with other hard rock veterans, family, friends and fans, in a show of Boston rock-and-roll unity to support their friend.

When asked why they wanted to do the show, In The Pink said, "On July 13th, 1989, a 15-year old girl and her sister barged their way into our dressing room after our show at The Channel in Boston to tell us how much they loved our music. A few months later, Kiva was running our fan club and had immediately become part of our family. She will always be our little sister, our biggest supporter, and our greatest inspiration.

Kiva and her fight against cancer is the inspiration for this reunion show. It will be a great night of the music that brought us together as a family in the first place, as well as one of love. We hope to see old friends, new friends, and In The Pink fans there!"

"For the last 29 years, In The Pink has been - and always will be - my favorite band," Kiva said. "However, they're so much more than a "band" to me. They are my friends - my family - and I love them so much. I am very lucky to have these amazing guys in my life and I am so excited to see them on stage again. I can't thank them and the other bands enough for what they are all doing for me; I am just blown away."

Rock for a Reason: A Concert for Kiva will take place on August 17 at the Mixx 360 Nightlife club in Malden, MA. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The event is ages 21 and up. For tickets and additional information, please visit

About In The Pink:

In The Pink was formed in Boston in 1986. After a few line-up changes that included Pat Badger (Extreme) and Brian Tichy (Ozzy, Billy Idol, Foreigner, Whitesnake), the band solidified "the family" and became one of the most popular bands in the local rock scene. In 1990 they inked a short-lived record contract with Epic Records only to become a casualty after their A&R guy departed the label. In 1991, the local Boston radio station WAAF decided to add In The Pinks' song "Under Summer Skies" to their playlist. The song eventually landed them at #1 on the charts. Popularity of the song spread and "Under Summer Skies" became a #1 hit in multiple markets, including 98 Rock in Baltimore. This was unheard of for an unsigned band. ITP was also well received amongst industry insiders and worked with artists such as Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme and Michael Bolton.

As the landscape of the music business started to change, In The Pink found it more difficult not to succumb to the new grunge movement and instead of sacrificing their integrity, they decide to call it quits in 1993. In 1998, MTM records released their CD under the name Sunshine Jive. In 2018, the band released U Got What U Wanted, which is a 17-song compilation of their music and is available for purchase on iTunes.
