June 10, 2019

Former Red Sox star David Ortiz is in recovery after undergoing surgery from a gunshot wound to his lower back/abdomen at a night club in his native Dominican Republic.

According to the Dominican National Police, the gunman was on a motorcycle and approached Ortiz from the back at nearly point-blank range outside the Dial Discotheque in Santo Domingo. The bullet went through Ortiz's stomach, and surgeons had to remove parts of his intesitines, gall bladder and colon. Ortiz's liver also sustained some damage. Despite all of that, doctors say he is in stable condition and is expected to make a quick recovery.

Jhoel Lopez, a television host who was with Ortiz, was also shot in the leg. He is also in stable condition.

In a statement released by the Red Sox, "Last last night we were made aware of an incident involving David Ortiz in the Dominican Republic. David's family has confirmed that he sustained a gunshot wound to the lower back/abdominal region. David is being treated at Clinica Abel Gonzalez in Santo Domingo where he is recovering after surgery. We have offered David's family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts."

Police identified the gunman as 25-year-old Eddy Feliz Garcia. According to police, Garcia was captured and beaten by bystanders immediately after the shooting. He was treated at the Darío Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo and then released to police custody.
