David Bowie Refused To Work With Coldplay Because He Hated Their Song

January 21, 2016

While speaking with NMEColdplay lead singer Chris Martin and drummer Will Champion paid their respects to the great David Bowie. "When you have any involvement in music he was one of the points of reference for absolutely everything, for genres and for how to be a rockstar or a poster or whatever it was. Completely defining that," Champion said. "So for musicians it's quite disorienting."

In the video below, however,  Champion and Martin recall a story of when they attempted to try and collaborate with Bowie by sending him a song with a "David Bowie-type character" attached. Chris Martin wrote him a letter, asking him to hopefully work with them. Champion quoted Bowie's response as, "It's not a very good song, is it?"

"He was very discerning - he wouldn't just put his name to anything. I'll give him credit for that!"
