Matt Lauer - FIRED by NBC News

November 29, 2017

News broke this morning via Jim Rutenberg, New York Times reporter, that Matt Lauer has been FIRED from NBC News.

Andy Lack, NBC News Chairman, sent the following memo to employees:

"Dear Colleagues,

On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company's standards. As a result, we've decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he's been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.

Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender.

We are deeply saddened by this turn of events. But we will face it together as a news organization – and do it in as transparent a manner as we can. To that end, Noah and I will be meeting with as many of you as possible throughout the day today to answer your questions.

Now, granted, it's very early on, so I'm sure there is more detailed information to come. But there has to be something very concrete in order for them to fire Matt Lauer, someone who has been with the network for 20-some-odd years. Right? Wouldn't it open them up to a huge wrongful termination lawsuit if this turned out to be nothing?

This issue has touched every corner of the country. There are new allegations against individuals being revealed all the time... ranging from sexual harrassment to rape. People have a lot of different opinions about what is serious and what is forgivable. There are people who are having their eyes opened to a world they never knew existeed, and there are people who roll their eyes every time another story like this breaks.

Everyone has a different experience, and everyone has his or her reasons for not coming forward at a particular time. It will be interesting to see how deep this actually gets, and how long this climate of revelation will last. But for now, at least, Matt Lauer won't be coming to the NBC cafeteria for breakfast.
