Trent Reznor Accuses Kanye West & The Weeknd Of Ripping Off Nine Inch Nails' Concerts

June 26, 2018

While speaking with BBC Music, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor openly accused rapper Kanye West and R&B artist The Weeknd of copying his production ideas for concerts.

While watching bands perform at Coachella, Reznor recalled seeing nearly every act perform with "screens and experimental production techniques", that were similar to the way to how Nine Inch Nails first used them as part of their live shows.

“And every band is synced up with a convenient, polite lighting package, you know? And I saw Kanye West blatantly rip off, and the Weeknd rip off, our tours production-wise, which I’ll say without any hesitation. And they know.”

Because he felt that almost every artist seems to use the same production elements, he brings up how he would be excited to see a band perform using just "smoke, maybe a color, a little bit of someone’s hair, and real, real loud guitars," with The Cure and The Jesus and Mary Chain as examples.

However, according to Pitchfork, production designer Martin Phillips has worked on the live productions for both Nine Inch Nails and Kanye West. The production team for The Weeknd have also mentioned how his live shows were more of an homage to Nine In Nails, because both the lighting designs by both Reznor and Prince were big inspirations for them.
