Study Shows People Remember Rock Band Logos More Than Other Genres

October 30, 2019

Setting yourself apart from the pack is a goal many bands try to achieve to help them stand out from the competition. Some wear wild masks like the guys in Slipknot. Some have unique singing abilites like David Draiman of Disturbed. And sometimes all it takes is to have an easy-to-remember logo.

In a study conducted by the ticketing company TickPick, they found that most people were able to recall the logos of rock bands from memory better than any other genre.

After asking nearly 100 people to recreate the logos of famous artists in rock, hip-hop, pop and EDM, fans showed the highest success drawing the logos of Nirvana, KISS, the Rolling Stones and the Red Hot Chili Peppers from memory. On a scale of 1 to 10, five judges rated the accuracy of fans' drawings with Nirvana scoring the highest with a 3.3. Following in second was KISS with a score of 2.6, then The Rolling Stones at 2.2, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers at 2.1.

Nearly 21% of the user-generated Nirvana drawings were judged as "near perfect" to the band's signature smiley face. However 75% of submissions failed to include the smiley face or the correct colors.

5% of submitted KISS logos were seen as "near perfect", but 43% of the drawings did not use the band's slanted "SS."

Of the fan-drawn Rolling Stones logos, 6% of them earned a "near perfect" score, while 17% of them did not include a mouth in their drawing.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers had quite an interesting turnout in submissions, as only 2% of them were considered to be "near perfect", and a shocking 30% of the drawings included an actual red chili pepper.

Fans of the bands rated 60 out of 100 in their confidence to recreate the logos, while non-fans rated themselves at an average of 43. Despite the difference in confidence, the rock fans scored an average of 2.5 of the rock logos, while the non-fans scored an average of 2.

Other artist logos featured in the study included the Wu-Tang Clan, BTS, Marshmello, Deadmau5, and the Jonas Brothers, which all received average scores ranging from 1.6 to 2.0.
