Spencer Charnas's Love for Horror Started with Michael Jackson's "Thriller"

October 30, 2019

It's common knowledge by now that Spencer Charnas and the rest of his Ice Nine Kills bandmates are big fans of scary movies. So much that every track on their latest album The Silver Scream is based around an iconic horror film like "Jaws", "Saw", "IT" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

But for vocalist Spencer Charnas, his love for the horror genre started with one of the most legendary music videos of all time, "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. "I remember nagging my parents to rent the 'Thriller' VHS because I was so obsessed with it," says Charnas.

"They had a whole bonus featurette about the making of it, and just studying how the director, John Landis did such a crazy job and Rick Baker, the special effects guy. I think, clearly, because it was a music video, but it was like a horrror movie, it definitely seeped into my subconscious and I think definitely influenced me."

"Thriller" left such an impression on Charnas that Ice Nine Kills even recorded their own cover of the song, which appears on their limited-edition package "The Final Cut."
