President Trump Walks Out to Metallica For Medal of Freedom Ceremony

September 17, 2019

On September 16th, President Donald Trump granted former New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera the Presidential Medal of Freedom. But before they walked over to the podium in front of the press, they both needed their intro music.

"Hail To The Chief" first played over the sound system in the White House press room. Then as it transitioned over to Metallica's "Enter Sandman", that's when Trump and Rivera entered the room as they walked over to the podium.

During his MLB career, Rivera was often nicknamed "Sandman" and would take to the pitcher's mound to the tune of "Enter Sandman", despite him never being a real fan of the band. He recently stated that his strong Christian beliefs are what repel him from listening to any heavy metal music at all.

During the ceremony, President Trump said of Rivera, "My wife asked me, 'Why The Sandman? Just tell me...' Our First Lady — I said, 'Because he put the batter to sleep, right?' The Sandman. A lot of people don't know that but the Yankee fans know that. We watched it for a long time."
