5 Classic Rock Biopics Coming To Theaters

January 11, 2019

With Bohemian Rhapsody dominating the box office as the most successful musical biopic of all time, shattering box office records, and collecting up all of the awards, more and more film companies want some of that classic rock biopic action.

Films about Elton John (Rocketman) and Motley Crue (The Dirt) are already on their way, and now the stories about Lynyrd Skynyrd (Street Survivors), Journey's Arnel Pineda (Untitled) and the Beatles (Untitled) will be arriving in theaters soon. There is also rumors of a biopic about The Who drummer Keith Moon in development.

Elton John (Rocketman) - May 31st, 2019

Set in the 1970's, Rocketman is dubbed as the "true fantasy" of Elton John's transformation from an average-Joe songwriter into a musical phenomenon. The film stars Taron Egerton as John, Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as John's mother Sheila Dwight.

Motley Crue (The Dirt) - March 22nd, 2019

Based on the band's best-selling memoir of the same title, The Dirt will follow the wild roller coaster ride that has been Motley Crue's career featuring original music from all four members. The film will star Daniel Webber as Vince Neil, Douglas Booth as Nikki Sixx, Iwan Rheon as Mick Mars, and Machine Gun Kelly as Tommy Lee.

Lynyrd Skynyrd (Street Survivors) - Release Date TBD

With the subtitle "The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash," Street Survivors will be centered on the 1977 disaster that claimed the lives of three of the band's members and how the survivors were able to cope in the events that followed.

The film will star Taylor Clift as Ronnie Van Zant, Samuel Kay Forrest as Steve Gaines, Lelia Symington as Cassie Gaines, Vavarone Garibaldi as Gary Rossington, and Ian Shultis as Artimus Pyle.

Journey (Untitled Arnel Pineda project) - Release Date TBD

If there ever was anyone with a real-life Cinderella story, look no further than Journey's lead singer Arnel Pineda. After being seen in a YouTube video singing in a Journey cover band, the real band hired him as their new vocalist, thus reviving Journey back onto the world's stage.

No lead actor as been cast to play Pineda, though the film will be directed by Jon M. Chu of Crazy Rich Asians. Chu has also gone on the record as being a longtime Journey fan.

The Beatles (Untitled) - September 2019

Not exactly a biopic. The plot will be about a young musician that wakes up in a world where nobody has any knowledge of the Beatles or their music. So he uses this to his advantage by using their entire musical catalogue to turn himself into a star. The film will be starring Ed Sheeran and will be written by Richard Curtis, and directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later, Trainspotting).
