Brent Smith Talks About His Writing Process, Fenway Park, Bill Joel and More with Mistress Carrie

July 2, 2019

Whenever Mistress Carrie and Brent Smith are in the same room, you can guarantee that they are going to have a very lengthy conversation about music. And during their interview backstage at the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion, they both expressed their love for rock legend Billy Joel. "I bought one of his many 'Greatest Hits' albums and ["The Downeaster Alexa"] came on the other day," says Smith. "I literally listened to it ten times just because the lyrics are so awesome and... it's very powerful."

Speaking of songs, Brent reveals that part of his writing process for coming up with lyrics for Shinedown is sometimes allowing the songs to come to him versus trying to force them out. "Things will come to me out of nowhere," says Brent. "We call them 'gifts,' where they literally write themselves. There's a lot of Shinedown songs that are like that." Smith includes "Get Up" and "45" as some of their songs that they consider "gifts."

Carrie and Brent later revisit their trip to Fenway Park earlier in 2019 and how one day they will bring their stadium tour there to follow in the footsteps of the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam. "Name the date and we're there!" exclaimed Smith.
