23 Years Ago: Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon Passes Away

October 19, 2018

Often times we celebrate pivotal moments in rock that have happened throughout the decades. Sometimes it's because of a game-changing album, or celebrating an era of music that had the power to influence cultures, and even the world. And sometimes, it's out of remembrance for someone that was taken from us too soon.

On October 21st, 1995 Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon was found dead in the band's tour bus after a heart attack caused by a cocaine overdose. Around this time Hoon's daughter was born, their second album Soup had just hit the shelves two months earlier, and Hoon had just turned 28, barely missing his entrance into the infamous 27 club.

Although the media covered his death, it paled in comparison to the amount of media coverage surrounding Nirvana's Kurt Cobain's suicide from the previous year.

But Hoon didn't leave this world forgotten. Candlebox dedicated their song "You" to the late Hoon.

The lyrics of Blind Melon's song "Change" can even be found on Hoon's grave.
