Well, you can’t get out of seeing - virtually at least - those far flung family members on Thanksgiving.

Zoom made an announcement to help out people earlier this month.

On Twitter, Zoom tweeted “As a thank you to our customers, we will be lifting the 40-minute limit for all meetings globally from midnight ET on Nov. 26 through 6 a.m. ET on Nov. 27 so your family gatherings don't get cut short.”

In the United States, CDC numbers show more than 11 million cases and more than 247,000 deaths from coronavirus. Nationally and statewide, health officials are stressing smaller gatherings during the upcoming holidays to slow the spread.

Usually, free Zoom meetings have a 40 minute limit unless you start paying for a plan. The platform has become very popular as schools across the country, including in LA County, shift to distance learning.

Locally in LA County there are plans for a curfew, going into effect this Friday, for restaurants, wineries, breweries and other non-essential retail from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Another new rule is gatherings in public places will be limited to 15 people from a maximum of three households. Outdoor dining will be reduced to 50 percent capacity. Non-essential retail is reduced to 25 percent capacity.

Statewide, California is grappling with higher cases and hospitalizations. California last week surpassed the 1 million confirmed coronavirus cases. Gov. Newsom has already issued a travel advisory along with Oregon and Washington state urging visitors and residents returning home to self-quarantine for 14-days after arriving from another state.

The state and Gov. Gavin Newsom is "pulling an "emergency brake" and trying to stop the spread of coronavirus - placing at least 41 counties back into more restrictive tiers including Orange County. Other counties that slipped back include Ventura, Santa Barbara and other counties in SoCal. LA County is already in the most restrictive tier, purple.
